Clearwire's Q4 preview: Revenue doubles on customer growth

It appears Clearwire's got some of its confidence back.

The 4G WiMax service provider has released select preliminary results from its fourth quarter, including revenue that was double that of a year ago--$362 million, compared with the year-ago $181 million. The upswing was primarily driven by growth in its wholesale business.

The figure exceeded analysts' average estimate of $355 million in revenue for the period, according to a survey taken by Thomson Reuters.

Clearwire is likely breathing a sigh of relief after several months of uncertainty over its ability to obtain the needed financing to continue its operations, … Read more

Cyber Monday steal: Ebates offers double the cash back

If you shop online a lot, you need to know about Ebates. And FatWallet Cash Back. And RewardsRunner.com. These and other sites give you back cold, hard cash on your purchases--kind of like a Discover card on steroids.

Take Ebates (that's my referral link, FYI). In honor of Cyber Monday, the service is offering double cash back from 500 stores.

Update: This deal is long since over, of course, but I still think Ebates and other cash-back sites are great for saving money on almost everything you buy online.

And in some cases, more than double. When you … Read more

Apple staked $2.6B in buy of Nortel patent portfolio

While many secrets remain about how Nortel's patent portfolio, which sold last month for $4.5 billion, is going to be controlled by the consortium of companies that pooled together to purchase it, how much Apple put into the deal is now out in the open. And the figure is a whopper.

Culling through the company's 10-Q (PDF), which was filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission yesterday, Business Insider this morning pulled out the total of Apple's stake, which was listed in a section about contractual obligations.

"On June 27, 2011, the Company, … Read more

Is this the end for red light cameras?

There seems to be a strange whiff of honesty swirling around the robot policemen known as red light cameras.

In different parts of the world, authorities are wondering whether there is any real benefit in having them at all. Yes, even financial benefit.

In the home of the automobile--no, not Detroit, Los Angeles--the Police Commission is, according to MSNBC, requesting that red light cameras should be removed before the Lakers and Clippers begin their new season.

You might wonder whether these objections are based on curiously moral grounds. Well, some objectors do, indeed, believe that red light cameras are merely … Read more

How to get cash rebates for almost everything you buy online

You remember the Bing Cashback program, right? It handed out cash rebates for stuff you purchased via the Bing portal. So, for example, if you were going to buy something like the 50-inch LG 50PK540 plasma HDTV from TigerDirect for $799.99 (a mighty nice deal today, by the way), you might get back 10 percent of the purchase price--just by clicking through Bing before placing your order.

Alas, Microsoft pulled the plug on Bing Cashback last June--but the concept lives on. In fact, before you buy another thing, head to CashReporter.com. The site aggregates rebate info from various … Read more

Analyst to Apple: Time to stop hoarding cash

Perhaps $46 billion in walking-around money is too much.

So argued a notable financial analyst on Thursday, saying it's time for Apple to do something with its colossal cash reserve that's better for shareholders. In an open letter to Apple's board of directors, Sanford C. Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi urged Apple to either return some cash to shareholders as a dividend or increase the value of Apple stock by repurchasing its own shares.

"In our conversations with shareholders, one common source of frustration--which is now bordering on exasperation--has been Apple's burgeoning cash balance and the … Read more

Microsoft kills Bing Cashback

Microsoft said Friday it is getting rid of Bing Cashback, a program that allowed advertisers to bid for search advertisements by offering a percentage of sales back to users.

When introduced in May 2008, Microsoft had held out the program as a significant way it could change the economics of search.

"In lots of ways, this was a great feature - we had over a thousand merchant partners delivering great offers to customers and seeing great ROI on their campaigns, and we were taking some of the advertising revenue and giving it back to customers," Microsoft said in … Read more

No whammies, no whammies, stop!

Press Your Luck is an iPhone game that's based on the popular game show "Press Your Luck" from the 1980s. The app does a great job of recreating the format of the original TV version, with three contestants who battle to answer four trivia questions in order to add to their spin count for when they face The Big Wall at the end of the round. Each correctly answered question gets you three more spins at the Big Wall. Once it's your turn to spin, you'll have the option to spin or pass, which you … Read more
