Easy encryption program

Encrypting your sensitive documents is a great way to protect against the wandering virtual eyes of Internet hackers. EncyptOnClick offers a simple way to turn away predators.

This freeware program's interface cuts right to the basics of encryption and eliminates any guesswork. A simple box offers a choice between encrypting files and folders and another offers a chance to decrypt folders and files. Encryption is a snap. Users just click on the box and find the folder or file they wish to secure by searching through a file tree. Once chosen the program asks for a password and asks … Read more

Portable and secure files

This encryption tool lets you take your private files and folders with you so that you can access them at any time and any place. Though it took a few visits to the Help file to navigate e-Capsule Private Safe HD's interface, it successfully encrypted test data.

During e-Capsule Private Safe HD's installation process, we were asked to enter several pass phrases for the four levels of access: Private, Public, Admin, and Shred. While we appreciated the multiple layers of security, having to remember so many passwords was a pain. But the program can be saved to an … Read more

Secure file encryption

NokVault offers untraceable file encryption storage. Though it took us a little time to get used to navigating the program, we found that it offers reliable and safe file protection.

When you first install the program, you're asked to enter your e-mail address for password retrieval. You'll need the password to get in and out of the program. The user interface is broken down into eight categories for accessing your vault and any files in the vault, and managing your keys and program configurations. It looked simple at first, but we had to spend a little time getting … Read more

Smart file encryption

After putting this encryption tool to the test, we found it one of the better ones we've seen. However, novices might find the settings options hard to decipher.

Kryptel's main user interface lists encryption and decryption options, along with backup and settings on the left side of the window. Integrated with the options are links that offer users help along the way. The program also offers drag-and-drop functionality, and access via your context menu. The Settings Panel is where the program gets a little harder to navigate. Broken down into General, Kryptel, and Shredder categories, the options are … Read more

AeA and ITAA to merge

Mimicking a larger technology industry consolidation trend, the American Electronics Association and Information Technology Association of America trade groups announced on Tuesday plans to merge lobbying efforts.

The AeA-ITAA deal, aiming to create a stronger industry advocacy voice in Washington, D.C. and provide a greater breadth of technology sector-specific programs, is expected to close by the end of the year. The combined group, to be known as the Technology Association of America, is expected to have approximately 2,000 member companies.

Acoustic Energy AE-29 Bluetooth Speaker coming to America

It's been awhile since we've seen anything from U.K. audio manufacturer Acoustic Energy here in the U.S., but the company is returning to the American market with a stereo Bluetooth speaker system. The AE-29 Bluetooth Speaker--already available overseas--is a three-part system, so the detachable speakers can be placed up to 3 feet away from the 20-watt amp for maximum stereo separation.

The AE-29 offers one-button pairing to any A2DP-compatible Bluetooth audio devices for wireless audio streaming from many cell phones and music players. Alas, that list doesn't include the iPod or iPhone, but you can … Read more

AES 256-bit encryption on Fujitsu hard drives

On Monday, Fujitsu Computer Products of America announced the Fujitsu MHZ2 CJ series for business notebooks that features full disk encryption. The new 2.5" 7,200RPM SATA hard disk drive (HDD) incorporates the AES-256 encryption standard at the hardware level without the need for additional software.

Unlike encryption with Windows Vista BitLocker, which requires the operating system to be present, the new Fujitsu drive performs its encryption entirely within the BIOS during power on. Encryption performed within the BIOS prevents the keys from being stored in the clear anywhere on the drive.

According to Fujitsu, "the key … Read more

AeA: More high-tech lobbying needed at state level

SAN FRANCISCO--The AeA (American Electronics Association) plans to expand its focus on government technology policy to include many more individual states, the trade group said Thursday.

After spending much of its history lobbying for governmental policy favorable to the industry at the federal level and in a few key states with high-tech centers--California, Texas, Florida, New York, Massachusetts--the group says the current legislative environment requires more.

At a meeting of member companies here, new CEO Christopher Hansen said that it's necessary the AeA expand beyond those traditional tech meccas. "Legislation affects this industry in a lot of places … Read more

Three sound ideas from the audio engineering show in NYC

The Audio Engineering Society was holding court at the Javits Convention Center in New York City last week. The show is aimed at recording industry professionals, but I figured I'd find stuff that would possibly appeal to consumer oriented buyers.

I heard a great demonstration of multichannel music at the ATC room. When I strolled in they were playing an Elton John recording, and the five big speakers punched out an incredibly dynamic sound. Classical music was natural and very, very clear. The big monitors are used in recording studios, but ATC offers consumer models as well.
