Fun with Dave the Funky Shoulder Monkey

Here at CNET UK, we love robots. We also love monkeys, so you can imagine the poo-flinging frenzy we got ourselves into when we discovered someone had crossed the two to create a robotic chimp known as Dave the Funky Shoulder Monkey.

Dave, dear reader, is an 8-inch-tall, interactive simian designed to sit atop a user's arm with the help of a small harness. Once in position, he gets his funk on, responding to inputs from an infrared remote control and performing a range of actions.

Crave 04: Laser drugs (podcast)

Jasmine's (mostly) back from vacation, and already hates the iPhone 4. Stick around for the end, and you may just see Darth Vader's cleavage.

Monkey brain controls robot arm, hand

Monkey see, monkey do. And if monkey is a cyborg with a massive robot arm, monkey will do anything it wants.

University of Pittsburgh researchers led by Andrew Schwartz have made a monkey control a seven-axis robot arm and manipulator with its thoughts alone by implanting sensors in the simian's brain.

Like Honda's brain-controlled Asimo experiment, the research is aimed at developing better brain-machine interfaces to give disabled or paralyzed people greater mobility.

The researchers inserted two implants in the animal's motor cortex, covering the arm- and hand-controling areas. The video shows how the monkey controls the … Read more

Elements of Firefox overhaul arrive for testing

Mozilla, faced with new competitive pressures, has begun work on three separate, significant changes to Firefox.

First is a new JavaScript engine that--with a transfusion from the project behind Apple's Safari--should run Web-based programs at least 30 percent faster. Second is a new graphics engine for Windows that will take advantage of hardware acceleration for graphics and text. And third is a programming tool to help bring to fruition a new system for Firefox add-ons.

Mozilla made notable gains against the dominant Internet Explorer since Firefox's launch five years ago, but for much of that time, Microsoft's … Read more

Fun kids sing-along app

Five Little Monkeys is a colorful sing-along app designed for toddlers and preschoolers, with three different versions--country, rock, and pop--of the popular simian head-injury song ("Five little monkeys jumping on the bed, one fell off and bumped his head..." etc.). Kids can select which version they want to hear using a visual menu, and then they watch the ever-dwindling squad of monkeys bouncing on said bed, as karaoke-style subtitles run below. You touch a monkey to trigger the next line of the song, at which point an owl--apparently a doctor, with a white coat and a head mirror--breaks … Read more

Firefox 3.5.4 closes security holes

Mozilla released Firefox 3.5.4 for Windows, Mac, and Linux on Tuesday to patch six critical security holes and some other problems.

The new browser version also improves stability and fixes a problem with clearing browser history, according to the release notes. Mozilla updated the corresponding version of its earlier browser to fix some of the same security problems by issuing Firefox 3.0.15.

The six vulnerabilities potentially could let remote attackers take over the computer by running their own software on the machine. For details, check the Firefox security site.

Meanwhile, Mozilla is on the brink of … Read more

Mozilla releases SeaMonkey 2.0

Do you pine for the Netscape Communicator days with unified browser and e-mail software but want something more current? Mozilla on Tuesday released SeaMonkey 2.0, which combines Firefox and Thunderbird.

The new version, for Windows, Mac, and Linux, is rebuilt with Firefox 3.5.4 and is more closely aligned with the standalone browser. "SeaMonkey is now much closer to Firefox as far as user profiles, add-ons, and functionality of user interface elements are concerned," according to the release notes. Among other changes:

• Retrieving e-mail using the IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocol is faster, and for … Read more

Cute RAR extractor

RarMonkey is a simple RAR archive utility that offers little to recommend it over a standard RAR tool.

Every developer who works with RAR archives undoubtedly already owns a utility that both compresses and extracts in this format. Such utilities typically offer Windows shell integration, drag and drop for files, and file association--as does RarMonkey. Most offer a Help file, and RarMonkey does, too. Many support automatically extracting multiple archives to multiple folders, as does RarMonkey. In fact, RarMonkey is just like every other RAR utility out there.

RarMonkey's one innovation appears to be the capability to use one … Read more
