Jaguar's new big cat embodies sport, luxury

Since Jaguar changed ownership from Ford to Tata, the company might be forgiven some time spent finding focus, but the new XJ Supersport shows that the company hasn't missed a stride. This car, while showing off a new era of Jaguar design, embodies all we would expect from a sport/luxury sedan. A supercharged V-8 gives it immense power, while road-holding technologies give it good cornering capability.

Cutting-edge tech includes a virtual instrument cluster, providing excellent display flexibility but unfortunate graphics. The stereo is the real luxury element here, a system designed by Bowers and Wilkins with 20 speakers … Read more

Baby, you can drive John Lennon's car

A 1965 Ferrari 330 GT 2+2 Coupe once owned by John Lennon is scheduled with be sold at Bonhams' Paris sale of Motor Cars at the Grand Palais, February 5, 2011.

The car was hand-picked by Lennon, after he got his driver's license for the first time, in 1965.

According to Lennon biographer Philip Norman, several luxury auto dealers in the Weybridge area, "jammed the road outside Kenwood's security gates with Maseratis, Aston Martins, and a Jaguar XK-E." But Lennon chose the ?2,000 light blue 300-horsepower, 4.0-liter, V12 Ferrari. He owned the car … Read more

Jaguar XK looks good with its top off

Some cars lose their unique styling when turned into convertibles. Witness the Audi A5 Cabriolet and the Mini Cooper Convertible. But the Jaguar XK, fantastically sleek as a coupe, still retains its style with a soft top. Looks aside, the growl of its 5-liter V-8 is certainly an attention-getter. With its fast-shifting transmission and dynamic settings, we were very happy in the driver's seat of this sports car.

We also loved the sound of the Bowers and Wilkins stereo, which brought out fine, warm detail in the music we fed it. But the navigation system is very weak for … Read more

Check out the latest video of the 2012 Audi A6

Teaser videos and pictures of the 2012 Audi A6 have been swirling around the Internet for the past couple of days, but here is the real thing.

Worldcarfans.com this morning posted this video on YouTube. It shows the 2012 Audio A6 sporting a delightful, if not conservative, design.

The 15-minute video highlights the LED headlights, taillights and 16-inch alloy wheels, an integrated trunk-lid spoiler, and a dual exhaust system. The wheelbase has been stretched out a bit longer than the 2011 as well.

Although Audi didn't release specs on its Web site or any press release I could … Read more

China unseats U.S. in supercomputer ranking

The Jaguar has fallen from the top of the food chain.

When the Top 500 list of the world's most powerful supercomputers is released today, the Cray XT5 system at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and run by the University of Tennessee, called "Jaguar," will drop to No. 2 after a year of eating the lunch of every other supercomputer in the world. In its place will stand Tianhe-1A, a system built by China's National University of Defense Technology, located at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin.

Tianhe-1A achieved a performance level of 2.67 petaflop/s (… Read more

Jaguar's supercomputing reign coming to an end?

The Jaguar supercomputer, housed at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, has been the fastest supercomputer on the planet for almost a year. But is it about to lose that title and place atop the podium?

Every six months, the Top500 project releases the rankings of the most powerful supercomputers. The current pace of technology development means the list does tend to reorder every half a year or so. But Jaguar has been poised at the top of the food chain for almost a year. Though the Top500 list doesn't get released until next week, it's been … Read more

In Paris, a jet-powered Jag, a tiny Land Rover, and five Lotus concepts

We just returned from the press preview of the 2010 Paris Motor Show, which is open to the public from now until October 17, where we saw a hybrid turbine car from Jaguar, iPads in a BMW, a scary Lamborghini, a compact SUV from Land Rover, and every car Lotus will build up to 2015.

Jaguar C-X75 concept Jaguar's C-X75 is one of those concept cars we wish was in production right now. An innovative hybrid powertrain using micro-turbines means it hits 60 mph in about 3.4 seconds yet gets about 36 mpg.

Nine new concept cars from Paris

Paris is noted as a fashion center, so we weren't surprised to find a number of very stylish concept cars at the 2010 Paris Motor Show.

But other regions of the world were not left out. Jaguar offers up the incredibly sleek C-X75 and Nissan came out with a funky utility car.

Hybrid Jag powered by electric motors, gas turbines

Not only does the Jaguar C-X75 look stunning, but its hybrid power train pushes into new territory.

Rather than build a typical series hybrid, with electric motors turning the wheels and a conventional gas engine recharging the batteries, Jaguar uses twin micro gas turbines as generators to either keep the C-X75's batteries topped off or supply juice directly to each wheel motor. These gas turbines spin at 80,000 rpm and get up to speed very quickly. Without them, the C-X75 can drive 68 miles on its batteries alone. But the turbines give it a total range of 560 … Read more
