Microsoft is providing an opportunity for schools to get their hands on free Surface RT tablets.
The software giant on Wednesday officially kicked off its Bing for Schools program. As part of that, Microsoft wants schools and their supporters to sign up for Bing for Schools as their platform for searching the Web. As they continue to do so, they'll rack up credits through the Bing Rewards program. After a school gathers 30,000 credits, it'll qualify for a free Surface RT with Touch Cover.
According to Microsoft, based on average usage, 60 Bing Rewards users can combine … Read more
Microsoft has revamped Bing search on Windows Phone 8, adding features that have been available on the Bing search apps for Android and iOS for the last few weeks. The company announced the changes in a post on the Bing Search blog Monday.
Windows Phone 8 devices come with Bing already baked into the operating system, usually accessible from a search button on the phone. Originally, when you ran a search and swiped left or right, you would see four categories of search results: web, local, media, and shopping.
Bing has condensed those categories to just Web, images, and video, … Read more
Microsoft's Bing doesn't have an equivalent to Apple Siri or Google Now, but that doesn't stop company officials from downplaying the value of the two most popular digital personal assistants.
"Siri and Google Now have a fairly shallow understanding of the world," said Stefan Weitz, senior director for Bing. The voice-controlled, interactive services are good for finding restaurants and movies and for driving directions, Weitz explained, but if you want to buy a new hard drive or figure out the circumference of Lake Erie, they start to fail.
Apple's Siri uses data from dozens … Read more
People don't seem as happy with social media sites and search engines, and advertising could be the culprit, at least according to one new study.
Released Tuesday in partnership with analytics firm ForeSee, the American Customer Satisfaction Index's E-business report gave search engines, social networks, and news sites a collective satisfaction grade of 71.3 out of 100. The score was 3.9 percent lower than last year's score and the lowest seen by the ACSI since 2002.
To explain the drop, the ACSI pinned part of the blame on online advertising. Among those surveyed, 22 percent … Read more
These days Google's popularity and reputation has made it the de facto standard for Web searches, and is enabled on many Web browsers by default. Even in speech, it's common to suggest "googling" some information, where terms like "yahooing" or "binging" are somewhat more obscure.
While Google's search results have been reliable, there are other options, some of which are fully supported in common browsers. So what keeps Google so preferred?
Perhaps many of us have simply become accustomed to using Google, so switching comes with a level of uncertainty that … Read more
Windows 8.1 users will eventually start seeing ads along with their usual search results.
Microsoft will begin to incorporate thumbnail images of the Web pages of Bing advertisers as part of the Windows 8.1 Smart Search, David Pann, general manager of Microsoft's Advertising Search Group, revealed in a blog post Tuesday.
The Windows 8.1 Smart Search improves on the search feature found in Windows 8. Smart Search can dig up results across a variety of sources, including your PC or tablet, your apps, your SkyDrive cloud storage, and the Web. Your results are also grouped together, … Read more
Microsoft showed off some new capabilities for mapping, including 3D imagery and voice command integration, on Wednesday at its Build conference for developers.
Bing VP Gurdeep Singh Pall highlighted some new possibilities with Bing. He told developers that the search engine can now be "a canvas for a whole lot of interesting things."
The Windows 8.1 app will now come with 3D imaging, Singh Pall told developers. He then showed how developers can use the 3D imaging and voice command to create new Bing search experiences. While viewing a demo of a foreign country map, Singh Pall … Read more

Microsoft's Bing carved out a 17.4 percent slice of the U.S. search engine market in May, according to the latest ComScore data provided by investment firm Macquarie Capital.
An investors note released today by Macquarie analyst Ben Schachter revealed that Bing's share in May rose only 0.10 percentage points from April. But that slow but steady rise showed an ongoing gain that's held relatively firm for the past three years.
Still, Google remains the search engine champ, well ahead of the other contestants. Its May market share showed an increase of 0.20 points … Read more
