Sony announced its new flagship Android smartphone, the Xperia Z1, putting the Android phone's camera front and center at the IFA trade show Wednesday.
The waterproof phone, which had been code-named Honami, comes with an expected 20.7-megapixel camera and a host of technologies to make the most of it.
"The Xperia Z1 offers you best-in-class imaging and a revolutionary new way to capture and share your memories," Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai said during a press conference. Hirai is in the midst of a years-long effort to unify Sony's many product families and reclaim glory days … Read more
Flower Paradise HD, at first glance, doesn't look like much due to its dated graphics and jumbled interface, but the more you play, the more you realize how addictive it can be. A fine mix between match 3 gaming and garden building, Flower Paradise HD finds a way to capture and hold your attention on two fronts, keeping money gathering on one side while building out your gardens on the other.
After you navigate your way through the numerous menus and offers to upgrade or download other apps, you can start playing Flower Paradise HD. The short tutorial shows … Read more
This blog is all about finding great-sounding audio products, in every price range. In June I reported on the best-sounding headphone I've ever heard, the Abyss AB-1266, but not long after that I was knocked out by Sony's MDR-V6, and now I'm auditioning these surprisingly decent $15 Audio Technica ATH-CLR100 in-ear headphones.
Introduced earlier this year, this all-plastic design is incredibly light, just 3.4 grams. It has 8.5mm drivers, sports small, medium, and large silicone eartips, and the headphone comes with a round plastic case. Amazon sells it for around $12, and even with that … Read more
Despicable Me offers all you need in a fun running game: gorgeous graphics, tons of power-ups, and plenty of challenges. For more experienced gamers this game may seem very, very similar to Subway Surfers, even down to the power-ups. Still, if you love the movie and its silly minion characters, you'll probably adore this game.
This running game makes you swipe and tap your screen to make your character dodge obstacles. If you've even played Temple Run or Subway Surfers, this game will be a piece of cake -- it's designed for kids, after all. In this … Read more
I'm always on the lookout for great cheap headphones, so when CNET's Matthew Moskovciak suggested I try Sony's MDR-ZX100 I jumped at the chance. We were both knocked out by Sony's MDR-V6 and MDR-7506 headphones, so I bought a pair of MDR-ZX100s on Amazon for $15. I had no expectations it would threaten those two amazing Sonys, but at less than 20 percent of those headphones' current prices I was curious to see how much of the magic trickled down to the MDR-ZX100. The MDR-V6 and MDR-7506 were both designed more than twenty years ago, when … Read more
Logic Master 100 Floors is an interesting app in that the interface, design, and setup are all very rudimentary; but the core logic puzzles are still challenging and rewarding. While you'll deal with pop-ups, ads, mediocre design, and a home screen that doesn't fit the device right, once you get into the logic puzzles, you'll be engrossed trying to solve and advance through the levels.
After installation, the app starts to an off-center home screen and a couple pop-ups. The app is free so there are ads, though they don't appear to intrude too heavily once … Read more
Google Glass may be the only big wearable eyepiece in town, but most people can't even get their hands on one. For the rest, maybe the Vuzix M100 can be an interesting alternative. Or, maybe, Vuzix can even offer aspects Glass doesn't.
I've seen the Vuzix M100 Smart Glasses before, at CES 2013 in January. The headset made an appearance at the Wearable Tech Expo in New York City this week. Its capabilities aren't exactly the same as Glass', and neither is the build; instead of a metal visor with a transparent eyepiece attached, the M100'… Read more
Musyc is a confounding app--part game, part musical instrument, and part music exploration. You can create a collection of sounds by dragging and dropping shapes onto other shapes, moving them about the screen, catching them, and creating chains that work in tandem to create those noises. It's simultaneously fun to experience and a little confusing, even after the rather detailed tutorial.
When you first open Musyc it will not be apparent what or how to use the app. So you should always start with the tutorial. Even from there, the game is a little confusing, so you should experiment … Read more
Microsoft's Windows Store has hit the 100,000 apps mark in short order.
"Thanks for a great \\build! Just passed 100k apps in the Windows Store," Microsoft tweeted earlier today.
That was fast. Windows 8 was launched only last October.
How fast? Google took longer to reach that point -- roughly two years after the Android Market formally opened for business.
And it took about a year and a half for the iPad to garner 100,000 iPad-specific apps. "The platform has been out for 453 days, with developers getting access to its software development kit … Read more
