Dell Streak 7 review: T-Mobile's first 4G tablet

The Dell Streak 7 is T-Mobile's first 4G tablet and a welcome comeback for Dell after the original Streak struck out.

If the $199 price tag seems too good to be true--it is. To get the Streak 7 for less than the cost of an iPod Touch, you'll need to jump into a two-year contract with T-Mobile, with a 5GB monthly plan that costs $49 a month for new customers, or $39 a month if you're already part of the T-Mobile family. A $29 monthly plan is also available, but restricted to 200MB.

If you take the … Read more

Oh Kno it didn't! Tablet gets tested by Lego robot

With today's proliferation of tablets it can be hard to distinguish one device from the next. But here's something that sets the Kno Textbook Tablet apart (besides its big dual displays and focus on students): it's getting stress-tested by a Lego robot.

The Kno product development team needed a way to automate tests of the ambient light sensor and the note-taking stylus' interaction with the LCD touch screen. So they built a Lego robotic arm (they give it the far less sexy name of "accelerated life test apparatus") to shoulder the repetitive work.

In the behind-the-scenes video below, you'll see the arm directing the pen back and forth and up and down across a screen, while another robot makes the device itself go back and forth. The team has been testing the stylus for touch, sweep, and flick motions that mimic those of a non-robotic user taking handwritten notes. … Read more

Dell Streak 7 to hit T-Mobile Wednesday for $200

The Dell Streak 7 is on its way to T-Mobile store shelves.

Starting on Wednesday, T-Mobile customers will be able to get their hands on the 7-inch tablet for $199.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and two-year contract, the carrier announced on its Twitter account today. The tablet, which is available exclusively on T-Mobile's network, will connect to the company's 4G network.

Dell dished details on the Streak 7 at CES earlier this month. The 7-inch tablet runs Android 2.2 and comes with the dual-core 1GHz Tegra T2 processor. It has a 5-megapixel camera on the … Read more

iPad loses significant share to Android tablets

Apple's iPad still reigns supreme among tablets, but its grip on the market is starting to loosen.

In the fourth quarter, Apple's tablet captured 75.3 percent of worldwide market share, easily besting Android-based devices' 21.6 percent share, according to market-research firm Strategy Analytics. However, those figures differ vastly from the third quarter when Apple had 95.5 percent share and Android had just 2.3 percent.

For 2010 overall, iPad's held 84.1 percent of the market, while Android devices accounted for 13.1 percent.

Despite the iPad's slip, Apple sold millions more in … Read more

Now that the Verizon iPhone has been introduced, the next question people ask me is if they should get it now or wait until the summer when a new version of the Apple iPhone is expected.

I also help another reader decide if he should get the Verizon iPhone or one of the new Verizon LTE … Read more

Google's Android 3.0 Honeycomb: What's inside

We already knew about Android 3.0's (Honeycomb) 3D capability and its new look with larger, revamped icons and the like. But now Google has revealed the details on many more feature updates and additions in its Android operating system for tablets.

The Goog's theme for tablets is bigger, better, and more. Tablets' larger screen size encourages a proportionately larger design and gives developers more room to play around with 3D graphics, live streaming, and deeper connections with Bluetooth devices.

It's clear that with Honeycomb, Google is urging Android 3.0 tablet makers to market tablets as … Read more

What should we call the new generation of tablet/laptop hybrids?

At CES 2011 we saw several examples of a new kind of hybrid product that straddles the line between laptop and tablet. We're not talking about convertible laptops, which have been around for years and are generally Windows laptops with screens that rotate around and flip down over the keyboard. We're instead talking about slate-style tablets, commonly running Android, but also Windows, that add laptop-like features in an unexpected way, such as using a hidden slide-out keyboard.

We saw examples of this design concept recently from Lenovo, Samsung, Asus, and others. The ones that stood out in particular (… Read more
