Evri building a data graph of the Web

Evri has a new twist on content navigation and discovery. Debuting Wednesday at D6, Evri is not a search engine, according to CEO Neil Roseman, but a "data graph of the Web" that leads to "incremental content engagement."

"What doesn't work well is when you get to other places on the Web," Roseman told me. "We read sentences, extracting the subject, objects and verbs, and map to other content on the Web." Evri uses entity extraction, natural language processing, statistical analysis, and other technologies to create relevant connections based on meaning … Read more

Gates and Ballmer at D6: The movie

Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer reminisced about 28 years of working together and addressed a number of topics, including Vista, Yahoo, Google, Windows 7, and search, in an interview with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher at D6.

Windows 7 demo at D6: Really? That's it?

During the joint Gates/Ballmer opening interview at the D6 conference on Tuesday (all stories), the audience was treated to an early look at Windows 7, which, according to Ballmer, will ship to customers in late 2009. The demo showed a full-screen multitouch interface embedded in the operating system. We saw a demo of a Surface-like app for organizing photos, and what appeared to be the Windows 1.0 Paint app, except that you can now draw with all your fingers at once. Also, a digital globe app, where the two-handed interface makes good sense. And a piano app, on … Read more

Windows 7, Windows Mobile on PDC docket

CARLSBAD, Calif.--Tuesday's quick Windows 7 demo at the D6 conference here was nice, although developers who really want to get a feel for the new operating system will probably need to wait until October.

Windows 7 and its multitouch interface will be a key topic at the Professional Developers Conference, which is set for October in Los Angeles. The PDC hasn't been held since 2005 when Vista was still in development. Microsoft also plans use the conference to show where it's headed in mobile, which probably means a look at Windows Mobile 7, although the company … Read more

D6: The swag rocks

Finally! After attending dozens of tech conferences in the past few months where the best giveaways were mints and baseball hats, I land at the D6 conference (all stories), where the goodie bag has, historically, fulfilled the potential of being, you know, good. This year at D6: some nice toys. See the video for the rundown.

In truth, I found last year's swag bag a bit more entertaining. Hard to top YouTube tube socks.

Microsoft to add multitouch interface to Windows 7

CARLSBAD, Calif.--In an interesting but perhaps unsurprising move, Microsoft plans to add multitouch interface to Windows 7, CNET News.com has learned. The interface will be shown in just a few minutes as part of Steve Ballmer and Bill Gates' keynote at the D6 event here.

Update: Ballmer says it will come in late 2009. Corporate VP Julie Larson-Green demonstrated the multitouch technology, painting with several fingers at the same time to show how it can process not just touch, but multiple simultaneous input.

"It's much faster to do certain tasks than using a mouse," Larson-Green … Read more

Gates to spend 20 percent of his time on Microsoft projects in retirement

At a reception prior to the start of the D6 conference, Bill Gates held court among a throng of reporters. He explained some of the specifics of his July 1 "retirement" from daily duties at the company he founded. Gates said he would invert how he spends time today. Instead of spending 80 percent on Microsoft and 20 percent on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, he will spend 20 percent of his time on Microsoft issues and the remainder on his foundation work.

Gates, who will remain chairman of Microsoft, said he will spend two to three … Read more

Gates on Yahoo: It's up to Steve

CARLSBAD, Calif.--Mingling with reporters on Tuesday ahead of his appearance at D: All Things Digital, Bill Gates was asked if he had comment on Yahoo.

"No," Gates said and stopped speaking. "Steve (Ballmer) might give a more nuanced answer."

Gates said he knew the question would come up on stage and that he wouldn't have more to say. "You won't see me answer since it's all up to Steve."

The chairman did have a little more to say, such as whether his new job would mean more time with his … Read more

Gates and Ballmer at D: Live Blog

CARLSBAD, Calif.--So I'm here live at D6 and ready to live blog the Bill and Steve show, along with Webware's Rafe Needleman. If this newfangled tech works, the live blog will be below.

I'm told the Windows 7 preview will be just a tiny--if highly anticipated--part of the discussion. My source on that, by the way, is Bill Gates.

OK, so the blog is up and running. If you need a break, I have another post based on some of Gates' pre-keynote talk. (short version--no comment on Yahoo)

Live at D6: Windows 7

Tonight at the D6 conference in Carlsbad, Calif., Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer and Chairman Bill Gates will take the stage together. The dual interview, to be presided over by The Wall Street Journal's Walt Mossberg, will be, in part, an exit interview. Gates is stepping down from his full-time role at Microsoft (corrected: he will remain as chairman of the board) in July. We will also get an early demo of Windows 7. As Dan Farber reports, we'll see a little bit of the interface, which promises to be very shiny. I'm hoping that we go a … Read more
