It's design month here at CNET Car Tech, and as part of our analysis of the automotive design landscape, we've rounded up some of the least attractive autos on the road. While we're all for innovative styling, bold accents, and daring design cues, there are times when you just have to tell it like it is. Check out our slide show of the 10 ugliest cars to cross our garage threshold over the past year.
It was only a matter of time before in-car Internet went mainstream. Over the past couple of weeks, Avis has begun to roll out its in-car Wi-Fi service, which allows drivers to turn their rental cars into mobile Wi-Fi hotspots. The service, called Avis Connect, is provided by Autonet Mobile using 3G and 2.5G (EVDO, 1xRTT) connections.
For an extra $10.95 per day, Avis says renters get wireless broadband connectivity "at all times and places during their travel, from airports to meetings to hotels, and everything in between." We're not sure how the Wi-Fi signal … Read more
We were impressed with Sony's MEX-BT5000 Bluetooth-enabled in-car stereo when it came out last year in all respects but one: it cost more than $300. For those of us who want a hands-free and Bluetooth-audio-enabled stereo with a more attainable price tag, Sony has just released an entry-level version called the MEX-BT2500. Check our review and our slide show.
We extend our thanks in advance for your indulgence of our trip down memory lane this morning. Honest, we've tried to shake this nostalgia bug, but it keeps coming back--and this time we're not going to fight it, and you'll see why.
The Speed Racer car is real. That's right. The "Mach 5" has been brought to life in full glory from the '60s animation version (at least the body, anyway) for the Warner Bros. movie scheduled for release next year, according to Gizmodo. And thank goodness for that, because it's probably the … Read more
Taking a leaf out of Harman Kardon's gadget book, Nokia is about to launch a in-car minidisplay to allow drivers to control their cell phone calls when on the road. The Nokia Bluetooth Display Car Kit CK-15W features a 2.2-inch TFT color display, which can be mounted on a car's dashboard to give drivers the information they need for making and controlling calls via some handsome-looking menus.
Like some of the Bluetooth stereos we have reviewed recently, the CK-15W will have the ability to download cell phone contact books. We'll be doing our best to get … Read more
When GM unveiled the Chevy Volt at this year's Detroit auto show, it admitted that the electric-powered required a technological breakthrough in battery development for the concept to become a reality. Skeptics suggested that the unveiling was little more than pie in the sky or PR hoopla intended to paint the General in more a more non-electric-car-killing light.
This week, however, GM has gone some way to dispelling that skepticism by awarding contracts to two firms with credentials in the lithium ion battery and automotive industries to come up with a solution to the Volt's power requirements. Compact … Read more
A group of MIT students have retrofitted a Porsche 914 with batteries in an effort to show that electric cars could be viable in the near future.
The students, led by senior Emmanuel Sin, removed the gas engine from the car and replaced it with an electric motor. The motor runs on 12 lithium-ion batteries from Valence Technologies, one of a group of companies trying to bring lithium-ion batteries to cars. Lithium-ion batteries can hold more energy than lead acid batteries, but they can be dangerous. Remember those exploding notebooks?
The students hope to conduct a number of tests and … Read more
La Jolla, Calif.'s Envision Solar wants to convert the wasted space that covers parking garages into a utility.
The company, which has raised $600,000 and is seeking $1.3 million more, plans to put solar panels on the roofs of parking structures. The electricity produced could then be used to power an adjacent building, be fed into the grid or used to charge electric cars in the parking lot.
Tesla Motors Chairman Elon Musk has talked about cutting deals with parking garages to install solar panels. And the last time we were at Tesla's headquarters, we ran … Read more
The Kenwood DDX8019 is yet another contender for your all-in-one in-car device dollar. The in-dash system plays CDs, DVDs (audio and video), MP3 discs, WMA discs, and USB audio sources out of the box. With add-on modules, it can be used to play satellite and HD radio and as a Bluetooth hands-free calling interface. Despite all this, however, its touch screen interface leaves something to be desired for playing media. Check our slide show and full review to see what we liked and what we didn't with this system.
Are you interested in what you'll be driving in the future? Do you need a phone that can get down and dirty? Are the colors on your monitor a tad bit off? If the answers are yes, then we have some photos for you. We look at concept cars, a phone that can withstand the elements, and a tour of a monitor calibration software application.
Every year at car shows around the world, car makers show off new design ideas. Concept cars represent a transition between current and future models, with only certain … Read more
