TiVo update brings new Netflix, YouTube apps, parental controls

TiVo's been on a roll with keeping its promises lately (though I probably just jinxed it by saying that). First, it updated large sections of the HD interface in January, and then it actually started rolling out Comcast Xfinity On Demand support, and now comes a software update with shiny new apps for Netflix and YouTube.

Well, new to TiVo users anyway; they're very similar to the apps you'll find on other streaming-media devices.

Each one takes several seconds to launch and connect. However, they're no worse than the previous versions, and you get much more … Read more

Apple scores big bump in customer satisfaction

Apple took home a 5-point jump in customer satisfaction, according to the E-Retail Satisfaction Index published today by customer analytics site ForeSee.

The iPhone maker's retail Web site scored 85 out of 100 in this year's index, compared with 80 last year. Only one other retailer, RueLaLa.com, managed a 5-point gain though that site grabbed an overall grade of only 75.

Despite Apple's ascent, it could only rise to second place, having achieved the same grade as QVC. On top as usual was Amazon.com, which captured a score of 89, up from 86 last year.… Read more

When cord-cutting is better than cable

When people ask me if they should "cut the cord" and cancel their cable subscription, I tend to focus on negatives. You're going to miss a lot of sports, reality TV, and live TV events -- even if you get free, over-the-air TV using an antenna.

That's all true, but it's easy to forget that sometimes the cord-cutting experience is just flat-out better than having cable. I was reminded of this after reading a quote by former NBC executive Jeff Gaspin at the end of Bill Carter's recent story about declining TV ratings in The New York Times:… Read more

Netflix may be looking to revive another cult TV show

Fans of the late sci-fi series "Jericho" could see the show popping up on Netflix if all of the myriad details can be ironed out.

The online video company has reportedly been speaking with CBS, the show's former network and production arm, about reviving the series, said TV Guide. CNET News is published by CBS Interactive, a unit of CBS.

A Netflix spokesman declined to offer any information, telling CNET that the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.

However, TV Guide reported that preliminary talks between Netflix and the network have already begun. CBS President … Read more

Blame Netflix troubles on spotty streaming selection

The first thing to know about Netflix is that CEO Reed Hastings says the business is in good shape.

The next thing to know is that hardly anyone on Wall Street believes him.

Netflix shares toppled last night 16 percent to $85.45 after the Web video-rental service issued first-quarter earnings and projected light subscriber growth for the company's streaming service in the second quarter. For the first three months of the year, Netflix added 1.7 million new streaming subscribers.

"The business is performing exactly as we had hoped," Hastings told analysts following the company's … Read more

Netflix not buying Comcast excuse about Xfinity data

In a letter to investors today, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings suggested that Comcast was competing unfairly in the streaming-video sector.

As part of his company's first-quarter earnings report, Hastings wrote that Comcast was providing the company's Xfinity Web-video service a competitive advantage not offered to Netflix or other competitors.

"Comcast caps its residential broadband customers at 250 gigabytes per month," Hastings wrote. "On the Xbox the Netflix app, the Hulu app, and the HBO GO app, are all subject to this cap. But Comcast has decided that its own Xfinity Xbox app is not subject … Read more

Netflix Q1 solid, competitive worries emerge

Netflix reported a first-quarter loss, but delivered financials that were better than expected. The company's subscriber tally has stabilized and Netflix projected "a much earlier return to global profitability."

The catch? Netflix spent a lot of time in its investor letter talking about competition from Hulu, Amazon Prime, and TV Everywhere efforts from the likes of Comcast. Shares fell 15 percent in afterhours trading. It didn't help that Netflix's marketing and content costs continue to creep higher.

The streaming media giant reported a loss of $5 million, or 8 cents a share, on revenue of $… Read more
