Electronic Arts held a large preview event in New York yesterday. Among the various other titles EA has planned for the next several months, Spore stood out. The Sims and Sim City creator Will Wright's brainchild attempts to tackle the scope of the entire universe, from microscopic life to interstellar travel. On every level of the game, you can design exactly how you want your world to be, from microbes to animals to buildings to space ships. While there wasn't enough time to get a broad view of the entire game and all of its aspects, I managed to spend some quality time on the title's creature and space ship editors.… Read more
Now that Verizon Wireless has thrown open its doors, and grabbed a lot of attention in the process, it appears that AT&T is still trying to convince consumers that it plays nice, too. First, it took pains early last month to remind us it had an open network ("You can use any handset on our network you want. We don't prohibit it, or even police it," an exec said) and now it is selling SIM cards for use with any compatible phone.
The 3G, 64K SIMs are just $10, but you get a whopping $5 … Read more
Whatever the proprietary Neanderthals may think, it's becoming clearer by the day that open source is, or will become, the natural state of software. "Nature" exerted her will yet again with the announcement that Electronic Art's SimCity has been released as open source under the GPLv3 license. The game was written back in 1983 (actually, before then) and so much of the code is too old to be useful except for research purposes.
But there's a lot of value in that, as Bill Simser notes:There's still a lot of craptastic code in there, … Read more
Singapore-based Verzio has launched what it claims is the world's first dual-SIM phone with tri-band 3G, called Duplii. While not much has been revealed about how its dual-SIM functionality actually works, the handset apparently supports "simultaneous dual mode standby" and is "switch-capable between two incoming calls." The Duplii also comes with a 2-megapixel camera, 2.2-inch QVGA TFT display, expandable memory card slot, and a built-in music and video player.
If you've followed virtual worlds at all over the last four years, the name Urizenus Sklar will probably mean something to you.
Uri, as he was known, was the muckraking journalist who founded the Alphaville Herald, a blog that reported on, among other things, the seedy underbelly of Electronic Arts' disappointing virtual world, The Sims Online.
In late 2003, he was banned from TSO by EA for what the company called terms of service violations, but which was widely seen as retaliation for Uri's critical coverage of EA and its approach to specific in-world issues. Smelling a free-speech … Read more
According to a weekend report on Ars Technica, leading game maker Electronic Arts has decided to give their pioneering game SimCity to the One Laptop per Child project for installation on every machine distributed to children in developing nations).
You probably played SimCity as a kid. Remember laying out your own city, making decisions about geography, building roads, residences, and commercial areas? You got to watch how your choices play out over months, years, and decades.
The game also reveals the importance of city planning and civic policy-making to ordinary citizens, making it likely that at least some children in … Read more
Thanks to my good friends over at GameSpot, I can now finally let out my breath: Spore is going to come out next spring.
For nearly two years, Spore, the next title from The Sims mastermind Will Wright, was all people in the video games industry could talk about. Well, OK, maybe not the only thing, but one of the major ones.
Then, suddenly, people stopped talking about it as its launch date slipped and slipped and no one knew when, or even if, it would come out.
Whether or not you're one of the few global warming skeptics left, there's no denying that the northeast has been experiencing an unseasonably--up to 85 degrees--warm October.
Now, even when you're playing escapist video games, you'll have to deal with the guilt that your habits have made it too warm to wear autumn tweed.
SimCity Societies (review from CNET Networks' GameSpot), the next generation of the SimCity computer game series that releases November 15, is going to simulate the environmental impact of different types of building and energy choices.
Players who choose inexpensive and "readily-available&… Read more
