Porsche's phone ready for starting flag

Considering how much publicity is given to high-profile phones these days, it's surprising that more hasn't been said about Porsche's entry into the handset race. That all could change soon, however, as the phone's launch apparently isn't too far off.

Pocket-lint says the 3G mobile handset will make its U.K. debut in November, sporting a touch screen, a 3.2-megapixel camera, an MP3 player and, as we reported earlier, fingerprint-recognition security. Perhaps most impressive, Porsche's "concierge service" will handle any issues to arise with the handset.

Of course, all this comes … Read more

Smarter hybrid cars on the way

A friend of mine sent me a link to a story at gizmag.com (here) that quotes another site as saying that Porsche is planning to offer a hybrid-power version of its forthcoming Panamera sedan. (I couldn't find the story on the original site, so I can't offer a link to it.)

The story claims this might be the fastest hybrid car in the world when it debuts in 2011, but that's purely hypothetical. By that time, there will likely be a lot of very fast hybrids. In fact, I suspect that most cars will be sold … Read more

Porsche holding open call for positions

Now this could be a great reality show. It's like a combination of American Idol and Top Gear.

Porsche announced that it's holding open calls for 100 jobs Friday at its training center in Zuffenhausen, Germany.

Women, especially, are being encouraged to apply. The company would like to increase the number of women working in its industrial departments, which currently stands at only 10 percent, according to Dieter Esser, Porsche's head of vocational training.

"Every day we witness that the women are in every way the equals of their male colleagues and are just as enthused … Read more

A hand-cranked Porsche (radio)

Somehow, we don't associate the name Porsche with a hand crank--especially when it's on a radio. But that's what the venerable designers have done with the "Eton Porsche Design Radio," which combines old and new by using an aluminum crank to power its "super-heterodyne technology."

The crank, of course, is designed for use in emergencies or camping trips; the rechargeable radio can also run on AA batteries or an AC plug. But the elbow grease could come in handy for other uses, such as recharging a mobile phone with an adapter that's … Read more

Volkswagen to do body shells for Porsche Panamera

Porsche is planning to partner with Volkswagen on the Panamera, according to a company update to shareholders, saying that the painted body shells for the four-door coupe will be supplied by the Volkswagen Hannover factory.

The engines will be supplied by Porsche's famous Zuffenhausen plant.

The Panamera is the new addition to Porsche's lineup through which the company hopes to "broaden its customer basis further and step up market penetration in order to safeguard long-term growth," according to a statement.

In other words (mine), Porsche hopes to snag more market share from the aging yuppies with … Read more

Stylin' municipal vehicles

We've shown you the taxis of the future. Could some of the following complete the city fleet?

DeputyDog, a blog about "stuff," has put together a list of the nine most interesting municipal-vehicle ideas.

It includes a German police car made from a Mercedes, New York cops on Segways, a Porsche Cayenne ambulance, a Ferrari 250 GTE that was used by the Italian police in the 1960s, a Lamborghini Murcielago and a Peugeot H2O fire engine concept car.

Can you imagine giving some poor guy in a Honda a speeding ticket when you're driving a Ferrari? … Read more

A closer look at the Porsche phone

Porsche may be synonymous with speed, but it's been a tad late in the mobile phone race until now. Still, better late than never--at least its marketing department has progressed beyond the kitchen, where it's been taking on Lamborghini and other rivals to produce appliances like coffee makers.

The first Porsche Design Mobile Phone was christened earlier this week in Germany as the "P'9521" (not a typo), though no details were available at the time it was unveiled at the Red Dot Design Museum in Essen. Today, however, the museum's blog gives up at … Read more

'Motor Trend' finds America's best-handling car

Over the past month, Motor Trend has been working on a test to find America's best-handling car. It has dribbled out videos of some exciting on-track driving at Laguna Seca, plus commentary by test driver Max Angelelli. Motor Trend published the results of this lengthy test in its article, "Track attack! We find America's best-handling car". We could take issue with the title, which suggests only American cars are tested. The only American car maker represented is Chevrolet, with the Z06 Corvette. For the titular criteria, Motor Trend merely means cars sold in America.

We could … Read more

Porsche 911: Is that a.m. or p.m.?

Here's the perfect accessory to ensure that you don't burn your Porsche-toasted bread or over-roast your Porsche-brewed coffee. The Porsche Design Worldtimer P'6750 is a titanium-cased wristwatch that can simultaneously display the current time in two world locations . Unveiled at this week's "Baselworld" watch and jewelery show, the Worldtimer P'6750 was designed by Eterna and makes use of a purpose-built movement module, which makes use of discs rotating behind the dial to ensure the secondary time zone is in sync with the main watch face.

There's no indication whether or not it'… Read more

Porsche Panamera photos send shivers

Car Online in the UK is reporting that it has snagged photos of the Porsche Panamera.

Is that something to be proud of? I'm not so sure.

The Panamera is the four-door sedan rumored to be in development at Porsche, as the company begins to go the way of Ralph Lauren in terms of dulling brand impact. The rumors have recently reached a simmering point with 2009 as the expected date of release.

The car seems to be based on the 928 GT, as you can see from this photo compared with those of the Panamera on Car Online.… Read more
