The most unnecessary headset ever

Hong Kong-based Brando's obsession with combining gadgetry has been long documented in this space, from its mouse massagers to aromatherapy speakers. And every once in awhile one of its lab rats actually turns out to be something useful. Not this time.

The "Stylus Hanging Bluetooth Headset" is as baffling as its name suggests. The headset hangs from your neck but must still be connected to some kind of headphones, while touting its weak multi-tasking role as a stylus. Which would make it the largest and most cumbersome stylus in the history of technology. They would have been … Read more

A headset for Mom that's not even pink

Instead of making the mistake of giving Mom the Wii Fit or a gratuitous kitchen gadget for Mother's Day, try to remember that exercising and cooking may not be her only concerns in life. There are other alternatives, for example, like a stylish Bluetooth headset.

Chip Chip finds this Motorola H680 model particularly feminine and, shockingly, not even pink. This floral "frost"-finished device lists 8 hours of talk time, a charger, and a carrying case. But if you do get one for Mom, be prepared for some snide comments about your rare calls home.

Tiny headset could be step toward implants

Steve Tobak may be onto something with his prediction for Bluetooth implants. In fact, some existing models are so small that they may lodge themselves permanently in the ear canal as an unintended consequence.

The updated Argard M10 headset--or earset, more accurately--weighs just 5 grams and, depending one's aural anatomy, would seem to be a good candidate. The latest version looks less shiny than the original, perhaps to avoid being mistaken for a piece of jewelry.

It also comes with a "stylish docking station," according to GeekAlerts, which resembles a pair of tweezers. That could also come … Read more

Talk hands-free with Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth headset, $64

Rumor has it Aliph will soon be releasing an updated version of its uber-popular Jawbone Bluetooth headset, but you can grab the original for just $64 (plus shipping)--a pretty solid deal considering that stores like Best Buy sell it for $129.

Renowned for its fashionable design and unparalleled noise-canceling capabilities, the Jawbone earned an 8.7 rating from CNET. Users were a bit less enthusiastic, mostly due to the awkward fit and difficulty pressing the buttons. I use a Jawbone myself and agree with the criticisms, but also think that once you've managed to wiggle the sucker onto … Read more

Motorola to adopt NextLink's Invisio Q7 Bluetooth headset

One of our Best of CES nominees this year was the NextLink Invisio Q7 Bluetooth headset, which promised voice transmission via a one-of-a-kind bone-conduction technology and without the use of microphones. It also has a nice discreet design with a Soft Spring ear bud that fits right in the ear. However, the Q7 has been vaporware for quite some time now--it was first announced two years ago and was slated to finally debut in February of this year, but it still has yet to materialize in the market. Today, we heard some news from NextLink via PhoneArena that NextLink is … Read more

Harnessing brainwaves with solar power

With all the development of alternative energy today, it was bound to come to this: Introducing solar-powered brainwaves.

Well, not exactly. But this "electroencephalogram device" does use sunlight as well as body heat as a power source for a variety of functions, which researchers hope will include everything from playing video games to monitoring hospital patients, according to Dvice. The lightweight headset, developed by Belgian scientists at the Interuniversity Microelectronics Center, tracks electrical impulses generated by thought or action.

There are many other systems in development to monitor brainwaves in a similar fashion, but this one is focused … Read more

Headset screens calls for you

Chinavasion regularly comes up with some dubious products--a tooth-mounted microphone, anyone?--so it's not surprising that it should come up with something like this item, which at first glance seems to be of devastatingly little use. Its "Caller ID Stereo Bluetooth Headset" is a wireless device that displays the incoming number before the call is answered--which, so far as we know, already appears on pretty much any phone the market today (other than blocked calls, of course). To be fair, however, Chip Chick points out that it might come in handy if you have an unwieldy handset, … Read more

'Metal Gear Solid 4' gets its own headset

The old formula, as was evidenced once again by Tranformers mania last year, is clear: Hype the title, leak word of related merchandise, and cash in just before the release (and before people come to their senses). As gamers have been losing sleep in anticipation of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, a "rumor" of a branded headset mysteriously began floating around the blog circuit. Then, just as miraculously, it turns out to be real and destined for sales that will coincide with the game's June launch.

The Bluetooth headset is not surprisingly done in … Read more

When one headset just isn't enough

Another case of life imitating art. Jabra has made a reality out of the cliched scene depicting a harried broker with a phone receiver in each ear.

Having long prided itself for its multitasking abilities, Jabra is once again showing off that prowess with its M5390--which allows for the use of two headsets simultaneously. That way, according to Tech Digest, you can use your mobile phone device in one ear and a desk or Skype headset in the other.

It's not the first time that Jabra has come up with a dual-receiver product, though the earlier version was … Read more

Tritton's Bluetooth headset hangs on for dear life

Being among the last holdouts who don't own a Bluetooth headset, we've often wondered how well they stay lodged in one's aural canal. It's not that we're philosophically opposed them--well, maybe a little--but we've just had horrible luck with earphones that refuse to inhabit our apparently misshapen ears.

This is why Tritton's new "AX Micro" Bluetooth headset is of particular interest. In addition to the usual features, including 5 hours of talk time and 150 on standby, this tiny gadget claims to have a "comfort fit attachment" and &… Read more
