Troubleshooting

Alert!: The Chooser and error 1010 - and OT/PPP Strip

If you are using Mac OS 7.6, try to go to the Chooser. If you are unlucky, you may get an error message that says "Application unknown has quit unexpectedly, error 1010." It may happen immediately, or after you do something such as select the AppleTalk option. Four readers initially reported this (Guy Teague, Marc Beauchamp, Mike Berg and Jim). Others have since confirmed it.

Update: Most instances of this problem are due to the Control Strip module OT/PPP Strip. Disabling or removing the module should eliminate the problem. There is an OT/PPP Strip web pageRead more

News from Apple

Catching up on more news from and about the mothership:

Mac OS 8 lives! Copland may be dead but its other name - Mac OS 8 - has already been revived. An article in MacWEEK says that Apple plans to label this summer's Tempo release (aka Mac OS 7.7) as Mac OS 8.

Early versions of Tempo are already in the hands of developers and reports have been very positive. In particular, it looks like it will include all or almost all of the Finder interface enhancements that had been originally developed for Copland. For example, here is … Read more

Apple goes public with AppleVision 1710 extended warranty!

After being posted here weeks ago, and after Apple pressured me to remove the serial numbers from my web site, and after Henry Norr ran a column on this matter in MacWEEK, Apple has finally publicly announced its extended warranty policy for AppleVision monitors - including the infamous serial numbers. (Thanks, Henry Norr and Mark Hattam.)

Local News: New search engine!

I am pleased to announced that MacFixIt now has a new, completely redesigned and much improved search engine. The main advantages of the new engine are:

(1) It lets you search for a contiguous multiple word expression. Previously, if you searched for <system crash>, it would list every page that had the words <system> and <crash> somewhere on the page, even if they were paragraphs apart and unrelated. With the new search engine, if you do an AND search, it will only report back instances where the words <system crash> are actually … Read more

New Speed Disk (beta) for Norton Utilities

Symantec has released an updated 3.5b1 beta version of the Speed Disk component of Norton Utilities. It is available at a special page on their web site. It primarily adds new features; no mention is made of any bug fixes. (Thanks, Brian Foster of Symantec.)

Update: When I tried this, it reported that my disk was damaged and so it could not optimize. It said I should run Norton Disk Doctor. However, when I checked the disk with NDD, it said the disk was fine. Another reader has also reported problems getting this Speed Disk to work.

From Apple: CFM-68K Runtime Enabler 4.0 and Disk Copy 6.1

Two new files from Apple (Thanks, Doug Eldred):

a. CFM-68K Runtime Enabler 4.0 This is it; the final release version of this file that contains the fixes for the bugs in the previous version. Check the ReadMe file for more details.

b. Disk Copy 6.1 This is a new release of this utility. However, it does not appear to be a complete replacement for Disk Copy 4.2 - as it does not do (as far as I can tell) direct disk-to-disk copying. It is designed specifically for manipulating disk image files.

From the Info Alley: Sound Manager 3.2.1 conflict; LW 8.4.2 fixes

The March 4 Information Alley reports:

a. There is a conflict between non-PowerPC 500 series PowerBook computers and Sound Manager version 3.2.1, which comes as part of the QuickTime 2.5 installation package. It results in an inability to record sounds. The work-around is to disable Sound Manager when you want to record sounds.

b. Apple details exactly what was fixed in LaserWriter 8.4.2 and Desktop Printing 2.0.2 (as ship with Mac OS 7.6). It fixes the PageMaker extra page problem, errors that could occur with desktop printing on a Mac with a … Read more

MacInTax problems

a. April 15th looms nearer. As if that is not stressful enough, MacInTax users now have to worry about a "glitch" in the software, as reported by the Associated Press: "Customers who filed their taxes electronically using MacInTax tax preparation software may have transmitted incomplete returns." A fixed version of MacInTax is available on Intuit's web site or by calling 1-800-750-9332.

b. Jeff Hecht reports of a subtle logic flaw in how MacInTax handles imports of previous year's data that contain multi-year depreciation items (the details are more involved than I can describe here). … Read more

SpeedLib files: a follow-up

Regarding the previously reported SpeedLib library files by the "Usual Suspects" - that claimed to speed up your PowerPC Mac, but that I had suggested was really a hoax:

Matthew Moss, of Motorola, writes: "I've not heard anything back from "the usual suspects" since sending them email. Looking for user nails99 on the Geocities web site turned up a page containing no software info. Needless to say, it does appear to have been a hoax; the software didn't do what they claimed it would, there was no difference between the 603 and 604variants (… Read more
