Error -49 when printing

I have seen several reports (such as one from Paul Lisowski) of this -49 error (file already open with write permission), appearing with avariety of different networked (and possibly non-networked) printers, after updating to Mac OS 7.6. Usually it means that you cannot modify a file in a given application because it is already open in another application. The exact cause here appears to be unknown, but one user reported that zapping the PRAM eliminated the problem.

PopUp Folder conflict with MacOS 7.6

Edward Floden reports a problem with ASD's PopUp Folder shortcuts and Mac OS 7.6: "A keyboard shortcut cannot be created using the Add button in the PopUpFolder control panel. You can click Add, then select a target for the shortcut; but immediately upon clicking Select for that target, PopUpFolder will freeze, locking up the computer. Most times, a Restart alert will be displayed, indicating a type 10 error." This was confirmed by ASD Software who promises a new version at some undetermined future time.

QuicKeys for Power Mac: Better (incredibly) late than never?

From a press release: "CE Software, Inc., today announced that the PowerPC native version of QuicKeys 3.5 will ship Monday, March 17. Accelerated to perform faster and more efficiently on Mac OS systems utilizing the PowerPC processor, the new version also offers increased compatibility with popular graphic design applications." This is the version that was announced as soon-to-be-released sometime in mid-1996.

Global Village modem "Fatal Error" report: Global Village responds

Last time, we mentioned that reader Kingsley Kwong got a "Fatal Error" message when trying to update the firmware in his SpeakerPhone modem. Global Village's Mike Pierce offers this reply:

"When a user gets a fatal error while updating the firmware with one of our modems it can be caused by a couple of things, but it really doesn't matter-usually it fries the modem and need to be replaced and it that's the case they should contact us for a warranty replacement. The best bet is to restart and see if the modem still … Read more

Epson Stylus Color 800 printer: a follow-up

Following up on our report from last time: While we continue to get reports from users having trouble getting the Chooser to recognize this new printer, we are also getting some very glowing reports, such as this one that a reader forwarded to me from the Usenet:

"Up to now I have had no problems whatsoever with my new Epson Stylus Color 800. The output is nothing short of sensational, in B&W, and especially in color. The output is virtually photographic in quality, and has to be seen to be believed at 1440 dpi on glossy paper. … Read more

ObjectSupportLib 1.2 and CFM-68K Runtime Enabler: Questions answered

Last time, we raised the question as why OSL 1.2 was included with the newly released CFM-68K Enabler 4.0. Here are a couple of answers:

a. Andy Bachorski (Apple Developer Technical Support) writes:

"Actually, several versions of OSL (1.2 included) are fat libraries, that is, they contain both PPC and CFM-68K code fragments. CFM-68K does not allow 68K systems to run Power PC software. What CFM-68K provides to 68K based systems is the ability to run shared library-based application. The Macintosh shared library mechanism is based around the Code Fragment Manager (CFM), which is responsible for … Read more

Changes to Apple's telephone support policy?

I received a copy of a bulletin that supposedly was mailed out to Apple Authorized Service Centers yesterday. While the wording was a bit awkward, making some of the details a bit hard for me to figure out, it seemed to say that, starting April 15th, use of Apple's SOS-APPL number would be limited to only 90 days after purchase of a product. After that, you would have to pay for support. As I get clarification and confirmation of this, I will post more info.

Update: I have gotten reliable confirmation of the above. A source that wishes to … Read more
