iPhone app puts your message in the movies

So you wanna be in pictures?

The PercyFX app for the iPhone won't make you a star or even let you deliver a line, but it will let you insert bits of text into clips from movies.

All you do is insert text at designated points and then add the personalized clip to YouTube, Facebook, or your iPhone or iPad. App maker Percy3D licenses clips from movie studios and makes sections of each clip customizable. (The clips also include links to buy or rent the full movies.)

The initial set of clips are from these Universal Studios movies:

• "The 40-year-old Virgin" • "American Pie" • "American Pie 2" • "American Pie Wedding" • "Back to the Future" • "Back to the Future II" • "Back to the Future III" • "The Big Lebowski" • "Despicable Me" • "The Fast and the Furious" • "2 Fast, 2 Furious" • "Fast & Furious" • "Hop, the Movie" • "Kong, the 8th Wonder of the World" • "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" • "Sixteen Candles"

The app and two sample clips from an animation by Percy3D are free, but you pay for the movie clips. A pack of three customizable clips is 99 cents and a pack of 10 is $2.99.… Read more

First Take: Sony S1 and S2 tablets

Sony has taken some heat for being late to the tablet party, but we cut it some slack the minute we glimpsed the S1 and S2 tablet prototypes back in April 2011. Both tablets promise a unique spin on what has so far been a series of cookie-cutter 10-inch Android tablets. Sony may be late, but at least it's bringing something special.

Though they won't hit shelves until the fall, we were lucky enough to get our hands on both tablets today. Sony is mum on pricing, but given Sony's history, we think it's fair to say these tablets will not be positioned as a cheap iPad alternative. To give each tablet sibling its fair time in the spotlight, here's our separate take on each of Sony's Honeycomb tablets. … Read more

Kingston Wi-Drive review: If size doesn't matter, capacity might

It seems I've been obsessed with size lately, so let's move on to capacity immediately. If for some strange reason you want to exactly double the limited storage capacity of the iPad, then the Kingston Wi-Drive would fit the bill perfectly.

The portable storage device is available in 16GB and 32GB capacities, which corresponds exactly to the first and second storage tiers of the iPad. The Wi-Drive is supercompact, about a third the size of the 500GB Seagate Satellite, which was the first wireless storage extender for tablets.

Though much smaller, the Wi-Drive offers one thing that the … Read more

It looks like Sony's partnership with AT&T will go beyond the PSP Vita.

AT&T commits to HP TouchPad 4G

Today, HP announced its intention to bring a 4G-compatible version of the HP TouchPad tablet to AT&T.

Exact timing and pricing have yet to be determined, but HP was nice enough to tease some of the tablet's specs. Aside from being blessed with 4G networking, the TouchPad 4G will use a beefed-up 1.5GHz processor, and have 32GB of storage and integrated GPS.

HP's competition in the current 4G tablet space includes the HTC EVO View 4G, the T-Mobile/LG G-Slate, and the (hypothetically 4G) Motorola Xoom. Manufacturers have also announced intentions to build 4G versions … Read more

iPad with improved display to launch this fall?

Apple is planning to launch a new iPad "at the end of the third quarter or early in the fourth quarter," according to DigiTimes.

Apple will reportedly call the new device the iPad 2 Plus, the Taiwan-based news site said today, citing anonymous sources. For now, details on the rumored device are slim, but the publication said it could be thinner than the iPad 2 and come with an improved display.

Other recent rumors have also suggested that an updated tablet will feature a high-quality screen. Last week, This Is My Next said Apple's upcoming "iPad … Read more

Amazon tablet follows iPad in Q3 projected shipments

Amazon's tablet is showing signs of arriving in relatively large numbers in the third quarter, according to a speculative report Thursday in Digitimes, which said shipment figures put it behind Apple's iPad.

Shipments may hit between 1 million and 1.2 million units for the Amazon tablet, the Taipei-based technology news site said, citing "conservative" estimates. Orders for Amazon-bound touch panels is higher at up to 2 million units. An earlier report said Amazon monthly order numbers would be between 700,000 and 800,000 units, with the tablet arriving in August.

Any number pales next … Read more
