eButton knows if you're a workout warrior or a slug

New fitness technology products like Fitbit and Jawbone Up are aimed at pushing healthier lifestyles. The eButton isn't yet ready for prime time, but the University of Pittsburgh project really knows how to get all up in your business.

The eButton tracks all those little details that you would hesitate to confess to your personal trainer. The device combines a miniature camera, accelerometer, GPS, and a set of sensors into a gadget that you wear pinned to your chest.

The eButton is kind of like the Santa Claus of fitness tools. It knows if you've been out jogging or if you haven't gotten up from the couch since that "Battlestar Galactica" marathon started 12 hours ago.… Read more

Peter Jackson reveals 3D secrets behind 'Hobbit'

Here's something for "Lord of the Rings" fans eagerly anticipating the upcoming movie "The Hobbit."

In a recent post on his Facebook page, director Peter Jackson gave fans a sneak peek at some of the innovative techniques used to shoot the film in 3D. The movie is being made with 48 RED Epic digital cameras, and since it's shot in 3D, those cameras have to be paired and positioned a specific distance apart.

Sounds easy? It isn't. While the RED cameras are a lot smaller than regular film cameras used in Hollywood, the lenses they use make it nearly impossible to place them close to each other. The filmmakers had to engage the help of 3ality Technica, a company that makes custom camera rigs, to create specialized mounts for the cameras used in "The Hobbit." … Read more

GAEMS G155 game unit saves a marriage

OK, the above headline is admittedly a little dramatic, so maybe we should knock it down a peg: "GAEMS G155 aids a marriage by letting an overgrown-kid husband get his gaming in without hogging the TV."

The GAEMS (Gaming and Entertainment Mobile Systems) G155 is a self-contained gaming unit that essentially transforms any Xbox 360 or PS3 Slim into a console in a briefcase. It combines a sturdy carrying case with a 15.5-inch 720p LED-lit monitor, an HDMI connection, stereo speakers, and dual 3.5 mm headphone jacks--all for $299.

Unique so far in design and function, it's advertised as a way for young gaming fanatics to take their Modern Warfare with them wherever they gather with other gadget-obsessed hipsters. I wouldn't be surprised to find one at the core of Occupy Wall Street. But I wanted to see if I could put the GAEMS unit's capabilities to use another way. … Read more

Megabites: Steve Jobs-inspired cake shop

We've seen some unusual Steve Jobs tributes since his passing, but a one-day pop-up shop in London should really take the cake.

A Steve Jobs-themed cake shop will open for one day only at the Hospital Club in central London this Wednesday, November 9. Not surprisingly, the shop is named Megabites. It is part of the five-day Internet Week Europe, a festival of events hosted by Europe's digital industry.

Blogger Miss Cakehead (I'm assuming that's not her real name) is behind the "iCake" project. She promises that all the treats will have a geek twist.… Read more

Ubisoft tells locked-out NBA players to dance

The NBA lockout is about to get really ugly. That's not due to some new twist in the union negotiations or some scheme by the owners--it's because it looks like a bunch of very tall men are going to dance and record it all for the world to see.

Ubisoft today announced a challenge to the out-of-work professional basketball players to benefit any charity of their choice. The stunt calls for locked-out National Basketball Association stars "to create a dance routine via the Just Create Mode on Just Dance 3 on Kinect for Xbox 360 for a chance to win a $25,000 donation to a charity of their choice."

Players will select a song and then do their favorite moves while the Kinect records their routine. They then name and save the dance to their Xbox 360 hard drive before uploading it to JustDancePlanet.com via Xbox Live. Ubisoft will pick the best entrants, and fans will vote to select the winner. … Read more
