An industrial designer's take on the purported iPhone 5

We've been hearing about an upcoming "unibody" iPhone since before the 4S version of the gadget hit the streets. And lately, we've been seeing lots of images on various enthusiast sites of a purported unibody iPhone 5.

But so what, some might say. What's the big deal with this "unibody" anyway? Is it simply a way to remove unsightly seams?

Industrial designer Don Lehman has a nice post up on the Tech Block in which he discusses the ins and outs of the supposed iPhone 5 shown in a video and pictures posted … Read more

Two years ago, on the heels of the iPhone 4, CNET's David Carnoy asked readers to vote for their most-wanted features in the next iPhone. When Apple introduced the iPhone 4S a year later, we just kept this wish list going.

With over 40,000 votes collected at this point, I think it's safe to say that we have an adequate sample of what iPhone 5 features you want most. In this Top 5 video, we count them down. Simple as that.

New hints of possible iOS 6 feature tweaks

With the release of iOS 6 highly likely in September (concurrent with the expected iPhone 5 announcement), the rumors around unannounced feature changes at tech sites are reaching an all-time high, so I decided to round up some of the big ones here. We already know about the main features in iOS 6 Apple announced at WWDC in June, but this list is more about leaked info that other sites are talking about. Obviously, we can't know for sure if any of these will be true at launch, but it's always fun to talk about what might be … Read more

Possible reference to 9-pin dock connector found in iOS 6 beta

The latest evidence that Apple is ready to abandon its iconic dock connector in favor of a smaller solution comes in the form of a reference to a 9-pin connector in the code for iOS 6 beta.

The code string was uncovered by 9to5Mac and directly conflicts with several other reports of the possible size of a smaller dock connector. Reports of the number of pins in the new dock connector have ranged from as few as 8 to as many as 19 (or simply retaining the 30 it currently sports).

Important to keep in mind is the fact that … Read more

Test of supposed iOS 6 resolution fuels talk of bigger iPhone display

Simulations of the next iPhone's rumored display resolution may make talk of a taller screen more credible, according to Apple-centric blog 9to5Mac.

Apple has been testing the taller display setting, unnamed sources told the blog. 9to5Mac used iOS development tools to simulate a 640x1,136-pixel resolution screen, which gave the phone five rows of icons stacked vertically above the dock, instead of the four displayed with the current iOS.

The simulator would not correctly display the five rows at any resolution other than 640x1,136 -- other resolutions scaled the icons to the size used for iPads, according to … Read more
