Upheaval at Linden Lab: Cory Ondrejka out

There's a major kerfuffle going on at Second Life publisher Linden Lab.

According to the virtual world blog Massively, Linden Lab CTO and employee No. 4 Cory Ondrejka has been asked by CEO Philip Rosedale to leave the company.

And Linden Lab itself has confirmed that Ondrejka is leaving, though it hasn't publicly explained whether he was fired or left on his own.

Either way, this is very big news in the Second Life world because Ondrejka has been there from the beginning, wrote the Linden Scripting Language and has been the engineering lead all along.

But according … Read more

Notebooks for the Girl from Ipanema

Why Philips would want to join the hyper-competitive notebook market is beyond us, and even more curious is why it would choose to do so in Brazil. But the Netherlands-based electronics maker will be doing both in December, Engadget says, with two new models.

The first has an 11-inch display, U2400 Core Duo processor, 1GB of memory, a 120GB hard drive, and a dual-layer DVD burner; the second a 13-inch screen, T7300 Core 2 Duo chip, 2GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, and a dual-layer burner. The finishes of their casings, respectively in magnesium alloy and piano black (shown … Read more

Philips wants you to talk forever

We're still waiting for Sony to hurry up and develop that sugar-powered battery for our mobile phones, but something like this might have to suffice in the meantime.

Philips is developing a handset for the Asian market that it says will provide 17 hours of talk time on a single charge and, on standby, will last for two months, according to SCI FI Tech. And it doesn't look like one of those one of those industrial-strength survival radios either.

The Xenium 9@9 has all the other usual appointments, including a color display, VGA camera, microSD card slot, … Read more

Hands-on with the overpriced Philips' DCM230

We previewed the Philips DCM230 back in July, along with a range of new iPod docks. We've now got one in the lab and we've had chance for a brief play.

Since we hadn't seen or heard anything about this model in almost half a year, we must excuse ourselves for being under the impression the RRP was 129 pounds ($268). With this in mind, our first thought upon seeing and hearing the DCM230 was, "Not bad, but too expensive at 129 pounds." But we were soon to be shocked when checking the price: it … Read more

Philips creates window with artificial daylight

The Philips Dynamic Daylight Window opens a window (pun intended) to an innovative idea. It's almost like the Transitions eyewear folks had a Vulcan mind meld with Philips' Ambilight engineers: The result is a window that lets you control how much lighting you want to let through, with part of the adjustment creating an artificial window-blind effect, according to Coolest-Gadgets, and the other adjusting the light itself so the sky can look a different color. Besides everyday use for homes in sunny climes, it could help with such setbacks as jet lag and Seasonal Affective Disorder. The only catch … Read more

Is Philips clock radio/digital photo frame a potential sleeper hit?

Around this time each year I start trolling the Web, looking for potentially interesting products that we should review for the holiday buying season. So, there I was, scanning Amazon for new Philips digital photo frames, and lo and behold I came across this $130 Philips AJL308 7-Inch Digital Picture Frame, Alarm Clock, Radio and MP3 player. For some reason, I hadn't seen it before.

The Amazon product description reads as follows:

"This is the perfect item for your bedside, as it functions as a clock radio, alarm clock, and digital picture frame. This beautifully styled dual alarm … Read more

Phone speakers go back to the future

As mobile phones continue their evolution as uber-devices for music and everything else, they've struggled with such things as external speakers--with some particularly strange ideas surfacing along the way. But here's an interesting twist: Why not make a pair that resembles the speaking end of an old Ma Bell analog receiver?

That's our impression, anyway, of these new portable Philips speakers made for Nokia handsets. Gadgetizer says the mini-system, which comes in black or white, also has an FM radio built into the dock. All it needs is an old-fashioned dial for navigation. Of course, if … Read more

Philips Cineos: 1080p LCD with Ambilight

Ambilight is one of those ideas that sounds like it was cooked up by a mad scientist who had a quiet week and a couple of colored LEDs lying around. The reality of it is quite different, because once you've seen Ambilight working, the scientist doesn't seem quite so mad anymore. The Philips Cineos 42PFL9632D makes him seem worthy of a Nobel prize.

If you've been living in a cave for the last couple of years, you might not know what Ambilight is--allow us to help. Simply, an Ambilight TV has a series of LEDs at the … Read more

Hot deal: Philips Bluetooth MP3/phone headphones, $18

For those who are iPhoneless, for moral or fiscal reasons, wouldn't it be cool to use the same headset for talking on the phone and listening to music? And what if it muted the music for the duration of the call? You wouldn't have to switch devices when you're walking along engrossed in the Brandenburg Concerti and your broker calls to say sell, sell, sell! You won't have to undo one set of headphones and reload a second pair just because your mamita calls you in the midst of Fat Joe's 1993 classic, "Shorty'… Read more
