One upside to Nokia's shake-up: An end to its lame ads

Perhaps one silver lining to Nokia's massive shakeup is an end to its poorly thought out "smartphone beta test" campaign for the company's flagship Lumia 900 smartphone.

You've probably seen one. Following the Lumia 900's launch in April, the commercials were everywhere.

They were also ineffective and likely hamstrung the phone's potential. The ads did little to highlight what made the Lumia 900 unique: its fresh look, powerful camera, competitive price, and the still little-used Windows Phone operating system.

It's no surprise that after a strong start, sales of the Lumia 900 fizzled, … Read more

For Nokia, tick-tock goes the comeback clock

Nokia has issued yet another profit warning and restructuring amid promises that it will lure customers with one-of-a-kind mobile experiences. The big question is whether it has the time and cash to rebound.

The company's latest restructuring effort rhymes with the last handful executed by Nokia. Nokia said it will:

Invest in developing new smartphones and feature phones; Cut costs; Lay off another 10,000 workers by the end of 2013; Return its devices and services unit to an operating profit "as soon as possible"; Close plans, consolidate functions and ditch non-core businesses such as Vertu; … Read more

Just how well did Nokia's Lumia 900 do?

Despite a mountain of hype and support behind it, Nokia's Lumia 900 was no blockbuster.

Recent data and comments suggest the phone performed well, but not great. After a strong start, sales petered. While AT&T was initially enthusiastic about the Lumia 900, it isn't saying much about the phone now.

More importantly, the Lumia 900 failed to break into the minds of consumers and establish Windows Phone as a heavyweight in the smartphone industry, behind only Apple's iOS and Google's Android. Still, the phone did well enough to keep Nokia in the game, even … Read more

Nokia Lumia 610 review: U.K.'s cheapest Windows Phone

We can't get the Nokia Lumia 610 on our shores, but our CNET brethren across the pond has plenty to say on the handset we first saw at Mobile World Congress in February.

Compact and tautly aimed at a youthful market, the multi-hued Lumia 610 is Europe's least expensive Windows Phone yet, and as such, is a welcome addition to the budget smartphone market.

Sure, there are some weaker points with the handset as part of the cost trade-off. The biggest drawback is the 800MHz single-core processor and just 256MB of RAM. The nearly halved memory means not … Read more

Windows Phone to outshine Apple's iOS by 2016, says report

Microsoft has gotten off to a slow start in the mobile world -- but a new analysis suggests it could edge its way into second place within four years.

Windows Phone will capture a market share of 19.2 percent in 2016, up from just 5.2 percent this year, projects market-research firm IDC. That number will inch past the 19 percent share garnered by Apple's iOS, down slightly from 20.5 percent this year. The surge in Microsoft's mobile share will receive a big boost from demand for Nokia's Lumia phones, especially in key emerging markets, … Read more

Intel open to putting Windows Phone on its chips

Intel has opened the door to potentially supporting Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system on its chips, according to a report by Computer World today.

Intel is taking a wait-and-see approach to the Windows Phone platform, which has won some critical praise but limited commercial success. Instead, the company is largely betting on the continued success of Google's Android platform, which is the most widely adopted mobile operating system in the world. Android phones running on Intel's x86 platform started to trickle out in different markets earlier this year.

Intel is hoping that Android can boost its presence … Read more

iPhone margin twice that of Lumia 900

The success of Apple is an oft-told tale, but what is rarely acknowledged is how complex the drivers are of that result.

Great design, sure. Innovative form factors, indeed. Pop culture icon, indeed. Lofty price points, absolutely. Savvy corporate moves -- well, most of the time -- for sure.

But sometimes it comes down to cold, hard numbers. As it has done in the laptop segment, Apple has demonstrated that it's very good at keeping component costs down while offering a complete product that appears superior than the competition -- and is priced accordingly.

No wonder Tim Cook landed … Read more

Has the iPhone lost its cool factor?

commentary Let's face it: the iPhone just isn't cool anymore.

It's sad, but true that there's a reverse correlation between availability and coolness. The harder it is to obtain something, the more highly coveted it is.

Apple's decision to offer the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 to prepaid wireless provider Cricket may have tipped the scales away from the cool end. With Cricket in the fold, the iPhone is virtually everywhere (T-Mobile, sadly, is still left outside looking in), hitting a critical mass of availability. The iPhone has gone from a gadget of the tech … Read more

Nokia Lumia 900 Batman edition swooping into shops

A "Dark Knight" edition of the Windows Phone-powered Nokia Lumia 900 is going on sale this week, tying in with the Batman movie hitting silver screens this summer.

The bat-powered blower is available exclusively from U.K. mobile-phone dealer Phones 4u starting June 1 and has the iconic Batman logo etched into its matte-black rear. Not the most subtle calling card for a masked crimefighter, but, y'know, Batman! Sadly, a Nokia representative says the company doesn't have additional details to share at this time about device availability in the U.S.

Nokia Lumia 610 can't install Angry Birds, Skype, and more

Nokia and Microsoft have run into problems with the new Nokia Lumia 610. While trying to avoid the fragmentation issues faced by Android, Windows Phone has properly shot itself in the foot -- with a catapult and an Angry Bird.

The budget Lumia 610 is the first phone powered by Microsoft's Windows Phone software to arrive with just 256MB of RAM -- and it turns out many Windows Phone apps just won't work on the phone. That includes Angry Birds, the smash-hit game from Nokia's fellow Finns Rovio, and even worse, Skype, which is owned by Microsoft. As snafus go, this one is pretty delicious.
