iModem Offers iPhone Tethering Via USB

iModem, one of the few for-purchase applications left that requires an iPhone to be jailbroken, allows users to tether their phones (use them as cellular data modems) via USB cables on Windows systems. Most tethering solutions thus far have required the use of a WiFi connection, requiring sometimes difficult setup.

A new release of iModem claims to do away with the need for proxy settings--a hallmark of tethering solutions--and also purports enhanced stability.

The tool requires Windows 2000, XP, Vista 32/64 bit and is priced at $10.

Apple's new iTunes surprise: No more jailbreaking

You just bought a new MacBook Pro. You can't wait to pull it out of the box and sync it with your shiny new iPhone. Perhaps you travel abroad a lot, and you can't afford to pay AT&T's insane international roaming rates (Who can?). Or perhaps you have an application that Apple won't provide you through its App Store but that can be installed on a jailbroken phone.

If you have a new MacBook, you may be out of luck. If you have Windows, however, you should be fine. The irony is stifling.

Dev-Team Jailbreaks iPhone OS 2.2

The iPhone Dev-Team reports that they have successfully jailbroken the iPhone 2.2 firmware. According to their post:

"The second beta of firmware version 2.2 has been out for a few days. It looks like Apple still doesn?t have a fix for devices already prone to the pwnage jailbreak and unlock.

We wondered aloud if the App Store restrictions might revive the Jailbreak scene and we noted that Steve Wozniak supports the scene.

Apple kills NetShare: No more iPhone-as-modem

Within hours of Nullriver releasing its NetShare application through Apple's iTunes Store, Apple apparently put the kabosh on the application, which allows users to turn the iPhone into a modem. Users can, of course, still use the application on a jailbroken iPhone, if they can find it. Nullriver doesn't have the application available for download from its website.

Jailbreak the new 2.0 iPhone software

The new 2.0 version of iPhone's software lets you download and install applications from the iTunes store. However, a lot of applications I want don't exist there. Good news open source fans. You can still jailbreak iPhone 2.0, thanks to the iPhone Dev Team. Watch our video to see how it's done.

First of all, this is not a newbie-friendly exercise. You must back up your data and be prepared to have to restore your phone from scratch. If you're not comfortable with uncertainty, you might want to hold off of doing this. It also most likely voids your warranty.

Why would you go to all this trouble? For me it's the capability to run applications that don't get approved by the official Apple apps store.

Hacker team releases iPhone 2.0 jailbreak

A little more than a week after the release of Apple's iPhone 3G, an unofficial development team has announced the release of software that "jailbreaks" the new device, allowing unauthorized third-party applications to be loaded.

In a post titled "Thanks for waiting," the self-dubbed iPhone Dev Team announced the release of Pwnage 2.0, which also allows unauthorized third-party applications to be loaded on older iPhones and iPod Touchs running the iPhone 2.0 operating system. Unlock/jailbreak for iPhone OS 2.0 imminent (screenshot)

The release of a tool capable of unlocking first-generation iPhones for use on unofficial carriers as well as allowing full read/write access to the filesystem--thereby enabling installation of unofficial, "jailbreak" applications--is imminent.

The iPhone Dev team has posted a screenshot, seen below, of an iPhone running OS 2.0 with both the App Store (Apple's third-party application solution) and Installer.app (the unofficial third-party application solution) running side-by-side. The iPhone is also unlocked, per the MTS carrier logo -- MTS is an unsupported wireless carrier.
