Alleged iPhone 5 case design points to big changes

Real or not? That's the question we always ask when we see design schematics, drawings, or mockups of upcoming cases for upcoming Apple products. But in the past, a few of those schematics have proved to be reliable previews of the design of next iPhone or iPad.

In this instance, the source of the alleged CAD drawing for a new case design for the iPhone 5 comes from a U.K. blog, Mobile Fun, which says a Chinese case manufacturer passed it on. Then Mobile Fun separately received a mockup (below) from another case manufacturer.

New Verizon CEO eyes next iPhone in the fall

Incoming Verizon Communications Chief Executive Lowell McAdam said he expects the next iPhone to launch in the fall, although even he isn't sure.

"You will have to ask Apple that, but we expect that probably sometime in the fall, and I think you will see a significant jump there when we get to that point," McAdam said today during a conference call.

McAdam explained that Verizon's plans to push more customers into smartphones have lagged a bit because it previously thought a new iPhone would launch in the summer. With the next iPhone delayed, people have … Read more

Analyst: iPhone 5 likely coming to Sprint, T-Mobile

Sprint and T-Mobile USA customers may not have to wait that long for a shot at the next iPhone.

That's according to Piper Jaffray analyst Chris Larsen, the latest to weigh in on the mounting speculation that carriers beyond AT&T and Verizon Wireless will get the next iPhone. Last week, Citadel analyst Shing Yin said he believed Apple would begin selling the iPhone for Sprint later this year.

"While we remain uncertain regarding the next-generation iPhone's specs and features, we believe the most noteworthy change could be the device's ability to run on more … Read more

Will you buy an iPhone 5 without 4G (poll)?

With the next-generation iPhone now likely to arrive this fall, rumors continue to swirl about whether it will support high-speed 4G data service.

What is 4G exactly? Well, it's a little more complicated than you might think.

Verizon's 4G service, which is already being rolled out, is called LTE (Long Term Evolution) and Sprint's is WiMax. To confuse matters, AT&T is supposed to roll out its LTE network later this year in select markets, but in the meantime, like T-Mobile, it's calling its HSPA+ network 4G when it's more like 3.5G (HSPA+ is not considered a true 4G network).

Bottom line: if you want an iPhone that supports 4G data, you want an LTE iPhone.

What are the odds of the next iPhone having LTE support? That's hard to say, but a few months ago Apple's Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook stated that the "first generation of LTE chipsets force a lot of design compromises." Meanwhile, all Verizon has said is that its next iPhone would be a world phone (it will work on both CDMA and GSM networks), but said it was up to Apple whether the phone would include support for LTE (4G) networks.

The question is, how much do you care? Which is why we've come up with this little poll asking whether you'd buy an iPhone 5 if it doesn't support anything less than true 4G (it will almost certainly support HSPA+).

As always, feel free to add your 2 cents in the comments section. … Read more

iPhone 5: Concept for dream notifications system

iOS notifications concept from Andreas on Vimeo.

On our list of iPhone 5 most wanted features, at No. 13 we have "improved home screen" with a better notifications system. A lot of people have been hoping Apple would come up with a more modular home screen that's more Android-like and has something akin to customizable widgets.

We suspect we'll get something like this when Apple rolls out iOS 5 next month at its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), but in the meantime, take a look at this concept for a redesigned notifications system/home screen that the folks at 9to5 Mac have highlighted. It's pretty slick.
