Sony rocks the vote in West Hollywood

We have to hand it to Sony: the company latched onto the notion of computers as fashion accessories well before colorful Inspirons were even a glint in Michael Dell's eye. We weren't exactly surprised, consequently, to receive an invitation from Sony to attend a launch party for MTV's Rock the Vote campaign, hosted by Christina Aguilera, at hipster West Hollywood boutique Kitson.

As tech journalists, we rarely rub elbows with bona fide celebrities (Wil Wheaton notwithstanding). But while the paparazzi and star-struck teenyboppers fawned over a gang of pubescent boys who we can only assume were in … Read more

Sony announces greenwashed Vaio laptops

Whatever laptop you're using to read this post, throw it in the trash and go buy one of the latest eco-inspired Sony Vaio Graphic Splash editions. It's for the environment!

OK, maybe that's a bit harsh. It's just hard for a cynic like Crave to swallow the green pill that Sony's pushing with its new Vaio FZ Eco Edition laptops, particularly when the touted environmental benefits look an awful lot like a sales pitch. "Slim design for minimum use of natural resources"? The FZ series isn't that much thinner than its competitors, … Read more

Kodak enters the fashion fray

We never expected to see the day when Kodak branched out into beads and handbags, especially for a target market of females 14 and up. But yesterday, during its launch for its new M-series EasyShare cameras, was that day.

Like Nokia, which began offering beaded wrist straps for its 6085 fashion phone, Kodak will soon begin selling fashion wrist and neckstraps for its cameras (though we suspect they'll fit any point-and-shoot). There are a variety of bead shapes and colors for the straps, including red, pink, silver and black, all priced around $18.

The bags range in size from … Read more

GPS kids' jacket sets boundaries--literally

GPS trackers aren't just for school uniforms anymore.

U.K. clothing manufacturer Bladerunner is out with a trackable children's jacket featuring a device that notifies you of your tyke's whereabouts by e-mail or text message.

The rechargeable GPS gadget fits into a pouch inside the jacket, has about a 15-hour battery life, and can track wearers within 43 square feet, reports The Guardian.

The tracker can be structured in various ways. You can, for example, configure a geo-fence and only get alerts if your kid steps outside a certain boundary, like school or the park. You can … Read more

Hard drives get into leather too

The computer fashion runway is getting crowded, but the models may not be what you'd expect: Some of the more recent stuff-strutting entrants are portable hard drives.

Manufacturers of mundane hardware are doing whatever they can to attract new consumers, whether it be Western Digital's flamboyant colors or LaCie's modern art. Now Japan's Evergreen is appealing to the tactile senses, Akihabara News reports, with a storage box covered in leather.

Regardless (or irregardless) of your feelings about tanned cowhide, you've got to give these guys credit for trying. Evergreen, after all, has even attempted to … Read more

Sugar's shopping spree goes on with Coutorture buy

Rainbow-hued blog network Sugar Inc. is on one heck of a shopping spree: last month, the women's media company purchased social shopping site ShopStyle, and now it's bought fashion-centric blog hub Coutorture Media.

No financial terms were disclosed.

Coutorture, which will remain a standalone site despite the new Sugar affiliation, isn't a blog network in the traditional sense. The 230+ blogs that it counts under its trendy umbrella aren't officially run by the site, nor are they part of an advertising network like Glam Media; they're the fashion-related blogs run by Coutorture readers who have … Read more

This shirt says that only one person Diggs you

...and it's probably yourself, or maybe your mom if she uses Digg. Think of it as social news gone emo. The "Digg button" has become one of the most universally recognized symbols of Web 2.0, and now NerdyShirts is selling this cotton gem at a sale price of $14.98.

The Coin-Operated blog notes that the only way to get more Diggs with this T-shirt is to get punched in the sternum. It figures, doesn't it? As in, "Go home, nerd, and go back to 'burying' fake iPhone rumors."

Best Etsy shops for decking out your tech

How do I justify all the time I spend on Etsy, the sophisticated and simply brilliant marketplace for hand-crafted goods? If I didn't visit Etsy every day, I wouldn't be able to report back to you on the best shops for buying custom tech goodies. (I'm also certain that my Etsy obsession makes me a better gift giver. Friends and family, if this is not true, please keep it to yourselves.)

Without further ado, my favorite Etsy shops for iPod cozies, laptop wallets, and the like:

iPod Crafts The name says it all. This store sells simple, … Read more

Latest fashion gadget: Hearing aids?

It's not unusual--and a good thing, in our opinion--for designers to come up with ways to de-stigmatize diseases, as we've seen with such products as fashionable asthma inhaler cases. What we didn't anticipate, though, was that hearing aids would be the next cause.

Although they may look like new Bluetooth headsets, the items pictured here are actually "Personal Communication Aids" created by the Phonak Group, which describes them as "the ultimate high-tech accessory," according to Inventor Spot. The Swiss company is apparently targeting those Boomers who actually believe that stuff about 50 being … Read more

Cheaper DSLRs to drive digital camera sales

Digital cameras are like wallets--pretty much everyone has one. And it's generally unthinkable to go to any event without one--particularly for those of us with a Flickr or Facebook photo-tagging mindset.

Perhaps as a result, amateur photogs are snapping up digital cameras at faster rates than even industry analysts expected. The global digital camera market is expected to grow from 122 million cameras shipped this year to more than 138 million by 2011, according to IDC.

The last four years of digital camera shipments showed declining growth rates, most likely meaning that the consumers who wanted a digital camera … Read more
