Comcast denies favoring Xfinity video content

In response to charges that Comcast favors content streaming via its Xfinity app on the Xbox over that of its competitors, the cable giant denied giving preferential treatment to its app and said its traffic policies are in compliance with the FCC's Open Internet rules.

Comcast announced in March that it will stream Xfinity on-demand content to Microsoft game consoles. The fact that Comcast content streamed directly to the Xbox console will not be counted against subscribers' total bandwidth usage caps prompted accusations that the cable provider is giving its Xfinity app an unfair advantage over the apps of … Read more

Pebble smart watch sells out on Kickstarter

There's a very interesting sociological experiment going on over on Kickstarter right now, where the Pebble smart team watch has unwittingly tested the old notion that you can't have too much of a good thing. Apparently, though, you can.

That's right -- Pebble doesn't want any more of your money. It's drowning in cash. Earlier this week, with 75,000 watches already spoken for, it announced that only 10,000 more would be made available in exchange for a pledge of cash (essentially a preorder). Now they're all gone. All reward levels that would earn supporters their own smart watch are now all sold out.… Read more

The 'Internet of Things' gets new digs

The "Internet of Things" has a new and improved switchboard.

Pachube -- basically an API to connect and collect data from all kinds of devices, sensors, and environments worldwide -- yesterday rebranded and relaunched itself as Cosm, with a new focus on collaboration and social elements.

Pachube's founders first envisioned it as a "patch bay" to connect the Internet of Things, but say they've since expanded the vision to be less about "behind-the-scenes infrastructure."

"The idea of the Internet of Things needing a piece of equipment has become less useful than the concept of it involving shared 'workspaces' and 'environments' ('microcosms' and 'macrocosms')," write's Cosm's Usman Haque in a blog post announcing the changes.

Aside from the name change, which Haque repeatedly touts as much easier to pronounce than Pachube, Cosm's improvements include a new user console to monitor data feeds, more real-time data, commenting, and a more sophisticated system to manage into the thousands of devices.… Read more

Facebook social reader usage crashing and burning

If you hate Facebook social readers as much as the next guy, you'll probably love hearing that the tools, which let you share articles you're reading, are tanking.

In a post on BuzzFeed today, we find that social readers from publications as diverse as The Washington Post, The Guardian UK, Daily Motion, and others, are collapsing. Essentially, users are abandoning the tools in droves. For example, The Washington Post, which grew its social reader to nearly 18 million users last month, has subsequently seen that number crater -- it's sitting at 9.2 million today, according to … Read more

Artistically censored Google Earth pix -- the Dutch way

Leave it to the Dutch and their famous flair for design to come up with a way to put a little panache into the censoring of Google Earth.

As Granta reports, Dutch artist Mishka Henner has discovered the remarkable way in which the government of the Netherlands has censored Google Earth's satellite views to block out certain military, political, and other sensitive sites.… Read more

Why women prefer online meetings

Sometimes, trends happen beneath our noses, because our eyes are focused on some distant horizon -- or on this morning's fine YouTube video featuring a cat, a baseball bat, and a bowl of cereal.

So I am grateful to a piece of research conducted by Harris Interactive on behalf of a company called TeamViewer, which reveals to me that women would prefer not to have so many physical meetings.

Indeed, apparently womens' preference for online meetings far exceeds that of men.

You might imagine, given that one of TeamViewer's purposes in life is to sell you online-meetings software, … Read more

The technology of the 9/11 Memorial

NEW YORK -- The new 9/11 Memorial is stunningly beautiful and extremely visitor-friendly, but the names of the 2,983 people who died in the September 11 attacks and the 1993 World Trade Center bombing aren't listed alphabetically, meaning that visitors may need help finding specific names.

Yes, there's an app for that. Two, actually.

The memorial, which opened on September 11, 2011 -- the tenth anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, and the crash of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania -- has already had more than 2 million visitors, and thousands … Read more
