Radar.net

Category: Mobile

Radar is designed specifically for swapping camera-phone photos around with your friends, an activity that is growing more and more common in today's mobile world. Radar assigns you a unique e-mail address that you can use from your computer or your mobile phone to send pictures to the service. Your photos are then shared with all your Radar "friends," who can access their accounts from either their computers or their cell phones.

One interesting aspect is that Radar is completely private. There are no social-networking features so that other users can find you: it allows … Read more

Hurricane watch: blow by blow

Climate change predictions have included warnings that hurricanes and other tropical storms could become more extreme. So this may be coming at just the right time to save at least some of you who live along the Gulf and Atlantic coastlines.

Scientists now have a system that uses data from twenty Doppler radar stations along the eastern and southern seaboard of the U.S. When a hurricane's within 120 miles of landfall, the radar data is aggregated. Using a computerized system meteorologists now can get three-dimensional views of the hurricane that are updated every six minutes. This is far … Read more

Zoho adds Google-like collaboration to spreadsheets

Zoho, who was at Under the Radar last week, upgraded their spreadsheet application, called Sheet, on Friday. The team added Zoho Chat integration and the ability for multiple users to work on a spreadsheet at the same time. Users of Google Spreadsheets will be accustomed to this functionality, and with the update, Zoho joins the fray of online collaborative tools (see our Under the Radar roundup of this category.)

Also new with the update is support for OpenDocument Sheet, which allows users of OpenOffice to work on and freely exchange documents.

Zoho Sheet still doesn't have the option to … Read more

Under the Radar: Caring is (screen) sharing

Fax machines, couriers, and e-mail are old news. Today's reviewing and meeting apps use the Web to share desktops, photos, and live video.

ConceptShare is a neat reviewing tool. We have reviewed ConceptShare before. VH1 used the professional version of this tool to redesign its Web site. ConceptShare's demo was really slick, showing the crowd a step-by-step brainstorming session on a design for a business card. ConceptShare focuses on asynchronous communication, meaning users note suggestions and changes without the need to have people in the room. It's almost like passing around a story among copy editors. It'… Read more

How to get rid of aliens for good

Japan's SolidAlliance is a company often known for its USB storage devices of dubious value. So it's of little surprise that it was the manufacturer behind something called the "Yu-tan Radar Strap"--which, according to CNET Asia, is being marketed as a "UFO detector and alien sniffer." If the radar senses the presence of a UFO, it will beep loudly and its red LED will begin to spin; if it detects an alien, it will blink and beep at full volume. You should memorize this so you can respond appropriately when the time comes.… Read more

All-in-one anti-surveillance device

Forget about all those traffic radar detectors that have come on the market recently. The truly paranoid need far more sophisticated equipment to find out who's watching them, such as this "All in One Professional Counter-Surveillance Device."

The $350 piece of hardware can supposedly detect GPS trackers, wireless hidden cameras, audio bugs, phone taps and laser eavesdropping systems, as well as disable their transmissions. There's just one problem: As Navigadget points out, it may very well jam every other digital device in your home.

A radar detector that yells at you

With so many distractions on the road these days--inside the car, as well as out--how is a person supposed to notice the flashing lights on the radar detector? Rocky Mountain Radar has found an answer to the sensory-inundated driving experience with the "C-450 Laser Detector."

Not only does it detect and scramble radar guns and beams, but Gadgetizer says the C-450 also issues a voice alert when police vehicles are within range. Does it help promote road safety? Of course not. But neither do cell phones and DVD players.

Personal radar can see through walls

It's not quite X-ray vision, but this portable radar can penetrate walls to detect people moving on the other side.

A device developed by U.K. technology company Cambridge Consultants provides a 3D image that indicates activity more than 65 feet away, according to an article in New Scientist Tech. (Cambridge provides videos of the "Prism 200" being used for spot checks and for longer surveillance.)

The radar isn't foolproof: Metal beams can present a problem, and a person who remains perfectly still might not show up, though movement from breathing can sometimes be detected. Other … Read more
