60-watt LED bulb to break $15 mark, Lighting Science says

Lighting Science Group and Dixon Technologies India today touted an LED light bulb equivalent to a 60-watt incandescent that they say will hit store shelves with a price below $15.

The omnidirectional LED bulb, in the traditional A19 shape of household incandescent light bulbs, will become available in India by the end of the year and worldwide, including in the U.S., early in 2012, the companies said. It's the first in an expected series of products, including streetlights and industrial fixtures, that Lighting Science and Dixon plan to jointly manufacture and distribute.

Intel creates $300 million Ultrabook Fund

What's an Ultrabook? According to Intel, it's a superthin MacBook Air-like laptop with great battery life and a solid-state drive, which is less than .8 inch thick. Most people couldn't tell you that, though. It's not surprising then, perhaps, that Intel Capital has created a $300 million Ultrabook Fund to drive continuing growth in the category. It is, however, significant news.

According to the press release sent today, Intel's Ultrabook Fund will "invest in companies building hardware and software technologies focused on enhancing how people interact with Ultrabooks such as through sensors and touch, … Read more

Bridgelux hits LED efficiency mark in move to silicon

Bridgelux expects to begin making LED chips on silicon wafers in about two years, a technology transition which promises to slash LED lighting costs.

The company today announced it has met performance targets for the new process which it projects could lower the cost of end-user lighting products by roughly 20 percent to 30 percent.

Bridgelux manufactures LED light sources, or chips, which are fitted into lamps and fixtures made by lighting companies. LEDs are more energy efficient and last longer than other lighting technologies, but the higher cost remains a barrier to mass adoption, particularly in the consumer market. … Read more

Side by side: LED, CFL, and incandescent bulbs

Philips recently released its Ambient LED 17/75-watt-equivalent retailing for $39.97. As it indicates, the bulb gives off roughly the equivalent light of a 75-watt incandescent bulb, but uses only 17 watts of power to do it.

Many sites have been doing head-to-head tests of various LED (light-emitting diode) bulbs coming on the market. However, I'm often asked where someone can find just a "regular person review" on how LEDs stack up against CFLs (compact fluorescent lights) and the soon-to-be-phased-out incandescents without getting too buried in stats on lumens, kelvins, wattage, and the rest of the … Read more

Philip Falcone: AT&T, Verizon are undermining LightSquared

AT&T and Verizon are working "behind the scenes" to stamp out new 4G wireless entrant LightSquared, according to billionaire hedge fund manager Philip Falcone.

Falcone, speaking to CNBC today, claimed the two telecommunications giants aren't competing fairly and are using their power to undermine LightSquared, which is run by Falcone's Harbinger Capital.

LightSquared is attempting to build a nationwide 4G LTE network that it will sell on a wholesale basis to other carriers that want to resell its services. But the company has run into a major hurdle with a coalition of companies reliant … Read more

Magnetic light switch cover offers new home for wayward keys

Jake Frey is only a third-year student of industrial design at Philadelphia University, but he's already marketing his simple, but smart, solution for misplaced keys.

Frey's modified light switch cover places a high-powered magnet on the back of the base plate, giving your keys a dedicated landing pad when you arrive home.

The $24.95 price tag sounds like a lot for a magnet, but it's still cheaper than other key-locating solutions like this wireless key finder from Brookstone, which actually worked for my mom until she lost the transmitter that went with it.

Jake Frey's Magnetic Switch Cover is available now at TheFancy for $24.95.… Read more

Philips brings home 'L Prize' with efficient LED lamp

Philips has won the equivalent of grueling car rally race for lighting.

The Department of Energy today awarded Philips' 60-watt equivalent LED bulb with the first L Prize for energy-efficiency lighting. Philips wins a $10 million cash prize. The product could be in stores as soon as early 2012, according to the DOE.

To win, the bulb needed to generate as much light as a 60-watt incandescent at 900 lumens but consume less than 10 watts. Its life has to be rated at over 25,000 hours, or 17 years of using a bulb four hours a day.

The bulb, … Read more
