NBC's tape delays and Twitter don't mix

No tape delay for Monday's top tech headlines:

This year's NBC broadcast of the Olympics may offer the best streaming technology yet for watching the games online, but NBC has come under fire from critics for not being good enough in today's instant-news world.

For for the first time, every event is streamed live online (but without full commentary). You'll need to prove you pay for a cable television package to watch the games as they happen, and some have said loading the streams on mobile devices can be problematic at times.

That kid needs your help, and we're here to help you. CNET has published its annual back to school tech guide, … Read more

CNET tablet battery life results

Editor's note:This list was originally posted on July 25 and is updated regularly.

Battery life testing is one of the last evaluations we subject tablets to at CNET Labs, but by no means is it the least valued. How long you can use your tablet is nearly as important as what it is you do while using it.

Our CNET labs testing standards ensure that all tablets, regardless of size, color, or operating system, are tested as close to equally as possible. Details on how we test tablets are included below the testing results chart. We've also … Read more

Foxconn's Chengdu facility was teeming with applicants this week looking to lend a hand in producing Apple's next iPad, according to a recent report.

According to MIC Gadget, Foxconn had one job requirement: all applicants must have good eyesight. MIC Gadget says that those workers are being hired to handle production of the long-rumored iPad Mini.

Although Apple hasn't provided any details on a possible iPad Mini, … Read more

News Corp. debates giving up 'digital savior,' The Daily

News Corp. has put The Daily, the iPad publication it introduced last year as "a digital savior" of newspapers, on probation, The New York Times reported.

The news and entertainment giant is trying to decide if the publication, the company's first daily publication created specifically for the tablet, could turn around losses that were estimated at roughly $30 million a year, according to unnamed sources.

This comes weeks after News Corp. founder, chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch confirmed that the media conglomerate would separate its publishing assets, including The Daily, from its fast-growing entertainment assets.

Does an app store's size matter if content is the killer app?

Apple claims 500,000 apps in its App Store for the iPhone and over 700,000 when iPad apps are added in. Google Play claims 600,000 apps for Android. Windows Phone is estimated to have 100,000 apps in its marketplace.

But do the numbers really matter, especially when the "new apps" may be content like video, music, and books?

I'm not a big fan of numbers just for numbers' sake. I watched search engines play the numbers game for years, each trying to be "bigger" than their competitors by having more Web pages. … Read more

New iPad to launch in China on July 20

Apple will begin selling its latest iPad in China on July 20, the company said today.

The price will be similar to that in other markets -- between $499 and $699, depending on the storage.

While the new iPad has been out elsewhere for months, it is just arriving in China, an increasingly important market to Apple. The company is beginning to generate more revenue from Chinese consumers, who see Apple products as a status symbol.

The iPad's continued success has enabled Apple to dominate the still-nascent tablet market. While other companies have attempted to breach the market, they … Read more
