LG struts TVs on London runway

If anyone cared enough to wonder why LG was showing off its latest LCD TVs at London Fashion Week, one look at them will provide the answer.

The company provided an early peek at its "Super Slim" line at CES last month, startling Crave television guru David Katzmaier with an unusual round hole in the frame. Now it's added even more personality to its "cutting-edge TV collection" for the U.K. market by giving it a red-colored back to complement the "soft red pulsating glow" of the round LED aperture, according to Pocket-lint.… Read more

Snap Instant Communicator: The Web intercom

The Snap Instant Communicator is one of the weirdest little gizmos I've seen in a while. It's a push-to-talk intercom system that runs on a PC and it only works when the Snap hardware console--which is just a few buttons, a speaker, and a microphone--is plugged in to it.

The console has eight labeled lights for the people you talk to the most. Once you add other Snap users into your account and label their spots on your device, all you have to do is press the button next to a name, and if the other party accepts … Read more

How we know who's really won the format war: The Blu-ray makeup line

HD DVD, just in case you didn't get the word, you're toast. The cosmetics industry says so, and would like to blow you a high-definition kiss goodbye. Mwah.

Well, sort of. Cargo Cosmetics has launched a new line called Blu_ray, designed for makeup artists who need to adapt to high-definition cameras. Design blog Notcot notes that it's marketed toward filming, photography, bridal makeup jobs, and other occurrences where high technology means that the camera really doesn't lie--those HD cameras can highlight any flaw.

In case you were wondering, it's able to skirt copyright regulations by … Read more

NEC's schizophrenic laptop changes again

NEC continues to use its LaVie G laptop as a blank canvas for artistic expression, whether it be for cars or Hello Kitty. In fact, the Japanese giant seems to use any excuse at all to release yet another design for this hapless computer. Case in point: the fourth anniversary of its direct-sales Web site. We're not kidding.

To commemorate this landmark event, NEC is releasing a limited edition of "pimped" laptops with illustrations by Toshiko Kimura, according to Akihabara News. (Who? And what is it about the Japanese obsession with the word "pimp"?) Anyway, … Read more

Closet Assistant attempts easy Web wardrobe management, social networking for turtlenecks

I once had a French teacher in high school who--legend has it--purchased about a hundred pairs of the same shoe in the same size after deciding it was the best pair of shoes he had ever worn, and calculating the wear rate combined with his life expectancy. For him, my guess is that picking out what pair of shoes he wanted to wear each day was not an issue, but for everything else, maybe he could have benefited from a service called Closet Assistant, which as the name suggests is a system to help you pick out what clothes to … Read more

Ideeli: It's Woot.com meets 'The Devil Wears Prada'

If you read that chick-lit classic Bergdorf Blondes (I'm proud to admit that I did), you'll probably recall the scene in which the shopaholic female protagonists hold a military-style planning session in advance of the legendary Chanel sample sale--a chance for them to snag the high-end designer goods at staggering discounts, the only caveat being that hundreds of other viciously competitive Manhattan women were also hoping to get their hands on the same stuff.

It was only a matter of time before that sort of upper-crust cutthroat shopping hit the Web.

Enter Ideeli (pronounced "ideally"), which … Read more

Tech and fashion just off the runway

BOSTON--Is a fashion and tech industry partnership the equivalent of mixing plaids with stripes, or is this a case of black and white being the perfect match?

After all, there are not many tech events where you need an Italian translator on hand.

Members from both groups eagerly met Tuesday to discuss their mating potential at a place they could both feel comfortable--the Institute of Contemporary Art (ICA) in Boston. The event was hosted by Moda e Technologia, an Italian nonprofit organization that promotes fashion and tech exchange. Big names present included Linden Labs, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, … Read more

New Wi-Fi card makes old laptops feel young

This is an ideal accessory for those unfortunate enough to still be lugging around a laptop that doesn't have a built-in Wi-Fi card. If you're tired of hiding that embarrassing protrusion from the slot of your notebook at Starbucks, now you can get something that will give you wireless access and make you look like a cutting-edge geek at the same time.

Asus has come up with what it calls "the world's smallest 802.11n USB 2.0 card," which comes with its own cradle that plugs into your computer and proudly sits upright in … Read more

Gadget blog and upscale NYC department store--a match made in heaven?

According to the PSFK blog, Manhattan's legendary luxury department store Henri Bendel is so notoriously old-school that it launched its first Web site a month ago. But the retailer is moving a step further into the Digital Age by opening a holiday gadget "pop-up store"-- curated by bloggers--inside its Fifth Avenue space.

Last year, Bendel had a holiday shop centered on the youth-oriented mobile phone carrier Helio.

But for 2007, Popgadget, which caters to female readers who appreciate both style and function and is staffed by a team of writers around the world, has selected an … Read more

Fashionable headphones for urban warfare

These headphones can beat up your iPod earbuds.

The Skullcandy G.I. headphones are the first we've seen with built-in bullet holders in the headband, as well as a zip-up pouch that holds what looks like a bottle opener. (Update: According to Skullcandy, the tool included in the pouch is a screwdriver/skate tool/bottle-opener combo.)

Available in four styles--Rasta, Desert, Camo, and CCore (pictured here)--the CCore models look like the ones to buy if you want the fewest number of people getting all up in your face and/or messing with your biz.

The ear cans cost $… Read more
