ARM's secret to success: Not doing things the Intel way

LAS VEGAS--ARM believes that its success is tied to doing things very differently from Intel. And you can't argue with its success.

The Asus ET2700 all-in-one joins growing roster of 27-inch all-in-ones

LAS VEGAS--Now I'm starting to wonder what it means for the vendors that have not announced a 27-inch all-in-one.

Asus joins HP, Vizio, and Lenovo in introducing a Windows all-in-one with a new large-screen display at CES. The ET2700 will appear this month at Best Buy with a 27-inch, 1,920x1,080-pixel-resolution display built in. Like HP's Omni 27, also available now, the Asus model doesn't have a touch screen. Asus reps told me at the company's booth that it will add touch in a midyear update. I've asked for pricing information, and will update when I have it.

The screen size is really the only significant news for this system. The Core i5 CPU and GeForce 540M graphics chip should come as no surprise, and the array of ports--USB 3.0, HDMI in, eSATA--is in keeping with its competition.

I'd only note that the design of the ET2700, with its edge-to-edge glass and pedal-style support foot, joins Lenovo in borrowing liberally from Apple's iMac design language. A vendor copying Apple is also not especially newsworthy, but at least the trend remains healthy.… Read more

Nvidia and Asus take on Kindle, Nook with $249 tablet

While no huge announcements came out of Nvidia's CES conference this afternoon, the company did manage to fuel the tablet price wars by teasing a yet-to-be named 7-inch, Tegra 3-based tablet that Asus plans to sell for just $249.

A company spokesman confirmed that there's no launch date for the tablet, which would be similar to the powerful Asus Transformer Prime and would ship with the newest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich. Strictly from a hardware perspective, though, it's sure to provide some fierce competition for Kindle Fire and Nook Tablet.

Asus MeMo returns to CES with a low price and two more cores

LAS VEGAS--Hey, remember the Asus MeMo that debuted a year ago at CES 2011? Don't worry, not many do. Anyway, it's back this year and according to Asus, the 7-inch tablet will actually be released in the second quarter of 2012. The kicker is that it will sport a Tegra 3 CPU and cost only $250.

Asus Transformer Prime gets major screen upgrade

LAS VEGAS--Not even a month after the Asus Transformer Prime's official release, Asus has already announced the next version of the tablet. The new version sports an upgraded 1,920x1,200-pixel-resolution screen with a few other improvements thrown in for good measure.

While the "old" Prime delivered images on a 1,280x800-pixel screen, the new Asus Transformer Prime TF700T, as it's called, more than doubles that pixel count, while retaining a 10.1-inch screen.

Asus announces Transformer Prime ICS date, addresses GPS and bootloader issues

When Asus unveiled its Honeycomb-powered Transformer Prime tablet last November, it stated that Ice Cream Sandwich would be on the tablet by year's end. As owners of the tablet can tell you, that didn't pan out. However, according to its Facebook page, the company will begin pushing the update to Prime owners worldwide, starting January 12.

Asus may pull the curtain back to reveal a new 7-inch Android tablet next week at CES, but just which one remains a mystery.

Leaking a few details and a possible image of the prospective tablet, Italian tech news site Notebook Italia (English translation) said that Asus plans to unveil a $299 7-inch tablet.

In 2012, MacBooks, ultrabooks mix it up

2012 promises to be a watershed year for laptops. Really thin will be in and internal optical drives out, while some designs venture into hybrid territory.

Apple: Apple is expected to incorporate the MacBook Air design theme into more models, including a 15-incher sans optical drive. Hasbro accuses Asus of stealing Transformer Prime name

Hasbro is accusing Asus of hijacking one of its trademarks with the release of the Transformer Prime tablet.

The toymaker claimed in a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles federal court last week that the electronics maker is creating confusion by blending the "Transformers" and Optimus Prime names. Hasbro said in a statement that Asus is counting on consumers associating the new tablet with children's toys to sell the Transformer Prime.
