Mercedes to show luxury compact concept in NY

Mercedes will show a more sporty and aggressively styled A-Class concept at the New York International Auto Show later this month. The carmaker says it used wind, waves, and aviation engineering as the design inspiration for what will likely be the next generation A-Class.

Images of the luxury compact show a complete design overhaul compared with the existing A-Class hatchbacks tooling around Europe. Sharp lines flow throughout the exterior, accentuating the vehicle's deep curves and edges. Featuring an elongated hood and redesigned headlamps, grill and fenders, the new body lines and structure almost tricks the viewer into thinking the … Read more

Lexus confirms LF-Gh unveil

Ahead of the New York auto show, automakers are showing a little skin, just a tease before the complete unveiling. Such is the case with Lexus and the LF-Gh, an already rumored concept for which Lexus released taillight and headlight shots.

Not to be confused with the Lexus LF-A supercar, the LF-Gh will be a hybrid grand touring sedan, Lexus says. The letters stand for Lexus Future Grand Touring Hybrid.

Lexus says this concept will show the evolution of its L-finesse styling, especially with a new look for the grille. The taillight shot shows a somewhat conventional sedan trunk lip, but a lens that trails across the rear of the car.

The front shot reveals an angular design and an aggressive-looking intake in the air dam. The grille seems to extend down the front of the car, across the bumper. LEDs make up the headlight array, with an LED parking-light strip across the lower edge.

The Lexus LF-Gh will be unveiled at the 2011 New York auto show on April 20. … Read more

Chevrolet wins award for hybrid supercar concept

The mid-engine sports car has been electrified. To celebrate its centennial, Chevrolet debuted at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show a hybrid supercar concept with the styling of a jet fighter, but the fuel consumption of a Volt. The design won the award for Best Concept Car at the show.

The Mi-ray (which is Korean for the word "future") roadster blends and updates styling cues from past sports cars, like the 1963 Monza SS and 1962 Corvair Super Spyder. Designers at the GM Advanced Design Studio in Seoul gave the Mi-ray LeMans-style scissor doors, an open top, and a … Read more

Kia debuts EV concept Naimo

Kia debuted its electric car concept Naimo (pronounced "Neh-mo") at the 2011 Seoul Motor Show.

Named for its square shape, the Naimo looks a little like a scaled-down Pontiac Aztek without B-pillars. By using carriage doors and a hatchback, the four-seater maintains a small footprint with a length of just under 13 feet, putting its size somewhere between a Mini Cooper and a Mini Clubman. It also forgoes traditional windshield wipers, and instead uses a high-intensity air jet at the base of the windshield to blow off rain and water. You may have experienced similar technology at your … Read more

Another look at Saab's Android infotainment platform

Although it's one of the smaller makes in the automotive industry, Saab revealed an infotainment system that shows it still can hang with the big boys.

Making its debut in the Phoenix concept car this week at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, the Saab iQon is an Android-based infotainment system that uses downloadable apps to bring navigation, entertainment, and diagnostics functionality into the vehicle.

Saab's iQon similar to GM's MyLink or Toyota's Entune infotainment system--both of which use a QNX-based platform--but instead of relying on the user's mobile phone and data plan for a connection, … Read more

Fornasari Thor ready for (simulated) planetary exploration

There's no reason why you would ever hear the name Fornasari. This Italian automaker has only been around since 1999 and produces fewer cars than Spyker. The company's line-up consists of one basic SUV platform mutated into a few variants, and a sports car platform. Engines are sourced from GM.

Yet Fornasari shows up at every Geneva auto show, filling its floor space with outlandish vehicles, such as an SUV resembling a yacht tender. At the 2011 Geneva auto show, Fornasari put forth its wildest concept yet, a toy for very big boys, the Thor UDV.

This vehicle, … Read more

Alfa Romeo readies a minisupercar

Curvy and compact, it would be easy to mistake the Alfa Romeo 4C for a Lotus. The new concept professes similar virtues: low weight, short wheelbase, small displacement, and efficient engine. The result: thrilling performance. At least, on paper.

Alfa Romeo says the 4C hits 62 mph in under 5 seconds. With a mid-engine configuration, 60 percent of the car's weight sits on the rear wheels, which should contribute to superior cornering.

For this concept, Alfa Romeo took everything it learned from producing the 8C Competizione and came up with a sports car appropriate for a more fuel-efficient era. … Read more

VW Bulli brings back Microbus

Volkswagen's history includes two legendary vehicles, the Beetle and the Type 2, or Microbus. As it revived the Beetle some years ago, the company takes a look back at the Type 2 in a new concept called Bulli. That name comes from the common German term for the Type 2.

The Bulli hearkens back to the Type 2 in its general shape, color scheme, and large VW emblem mounted on the front. But Volkswagen aficionados will immediately notice the lack of a split front windshield.

And unlike the flat four-cylinder engine that rested at the rear of the Type … Read more
