Dell undercuts Netbook competitors with the $299 Mini 10v

Dell has released a revamp of its Mini 10 Netbook, that "delivers on value," says the company. Accordingly, the new product's name is the Dell Mini 10v. Starting at $299, the Mini 10v is a bold shot across the bow of the competition, notably Acer's $349 Aspire One. We've seen talk of $199 or cheaper Netbooks bundled with mobile phone company contracts, but nothing this inexpensive as a stand-alone product.

The $299 base price Mini 10v includes An Intel Atom N270 CPU, 1GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, a 3-cell battery, and Windows XP. … Read more

A work in progress

Yahoo's Zimbra Desktop is a strange beast. Chiefly intended for pre-existing users of Zimbra's business services, or those who access Zimbra's hosted server through the open-source community, the offline, multiplatform, open source Zimbra Desktop also has some intriguing uses for the rest of us. However, many features are acutely in beta. This makes its position as a standalone app precarious, as it does this review--pre-existing Zimbra fellows get a much richer feature set added to what is their chief e-mail in-box. For them, the emphasis on collaborating wiki documents, uploading files, and sharing entire subsets of the … Read more

Lenovo updates Netbook line: meet the IdeaPad S10-2

We were impressed with the recent 6-cell battery upgrade for Lenovo's S10 Netbook, and now the company (most famous for the ThinkPad line of business laptops) has announced a bigger revamp.

The Lenovo IdeaPad S10-2 (well, it's transparency in product naming, if nothing else) will be slightly thinner and lighter than the original, starting at 2.2 pounds and .71-inches. There's a new patterned design on the lids, available in white, black, pink, or grey.

We recently got a sneak peek at the new S10-2, and the most notable improvement was probably the tweaked keyboard, which has … Read more

Mozilla's Prism hits 1.0, gets new goodies

Mozilla's "Web application as a desktop application" service Prism has hit version 1.0 (download Prism). On Friday, the company released it with its own standalone site, and an updated API that lets developers tack on Prism-specific features to their Web applications.

This version also comes with a few niceties like tray icon notifications, application-specific settings, and automatic updates. As with Prism for Firefox, you're also now able to clear private data like user names and passwords, along with any browsing history. What's neat in Prism's case is that it's just for that … Read more

Numerous editing options

ACDSee Photo Manager 2009 promises to be a program that bridges the gap between high-powered photo alteration software and online sharing programs. With a dizzying amount of options and sophistication, it may do all it promises but it could leave users overwhelmed.

This program opens up with an opportunity for users to take a virtual tour of the program and learn about all its features. This is an excellent place to start, because the ACDSee Photo Manager gets confusing in a hurry. This is not a bad thing, however. Users familiar with Photoshop's options will find everything from cropping … Read more

Shady performance

Yassak Home Edition is a monitoring program that scans URLs for questionable content and blocks the site from view. It sounds great, but in reality, we experienced multiple errors, a strange language, and unresponsive performance that prevented us from seeing what it had to offer.

When installed the program appears as a taskbar icon. When we clicked on it, it produced several blank error messages, appearing one right after the other. Finally, a tiny black window appeared in the far right corner of our desktop, but its heading wasn't in English. What's more, whenever we hovered over the … Read more

One of the best

It's refreshing to come across a program that has a smart, straightforward design, and combines it with good performance. FlexTk Express is such a program and is one of the best file managers we've seen in a while. And to top it all off, it's free.

The user interface uses stylish command buttons at the top of the window that lets you search, organize, sync, classify, and clean up files as needed. You're greeted with a view of your hard disks, including the amount of free and used space for each. We were able to use … Read more

Samsung extends ergo-camcorder lineup by two

At CES 2009 and again at a spring lineup show, Samsung showed off its HMX-R10, a full HD camcorder with an "Active Angle" lens that's been angled up 25 degrees so you don't have to bend your wrist to get a level shot with the camcorder. I had my doubts that this strange-but-clever design would ever make it to stores, but it's available now for $500.

Samsung must be getting good feedback about the design, too, since its decided to add two standard-def models to its camcorder lineup: the SMX-C14 and SMX-C10. The difference between … Read more
