First Look video: Kindle for iPhone

If you don't feel like spending more than $300 on the Kindle 2, Amazon's free Kindle ebook application for the iPhone and iPod Touch may be a much more affordable, if imperfect, solution.

We compared the Kindle 2 and the Kindle application for the iPhone/iPod Touch, and came to the conclusion that the Kindle iPhone application is great for reading short passages, but the Kindle 2 is better for longer reading.

Also, you can't get subscriptions on the iPhone version and you can't buy books from within the application. Still, $359 is a lot to … Read more

Who plays 'Watchmen'? You, if you have an iPhone

Need something to do while you're waiting hours in line to get decent seats for you and 12 other people for "Watchmen" this Friday? Obviously I do. Thankfully, on March 6, Warner Bros. Digital Distribution will release "Watchmen: Justice is Coming" for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

This is a massively multiplayer online game based on the movie, according to developer Last Legion Games. You can create your own character and customize its appearance. Although how detailed you can get is not yet known.

If I ever dreamed about a "Watchmen" MMO, I … Read more

ShoutOUT that SMS with a new iPhone app

Tired of fumbling around the iPhone's onscreen keyboard to send a text message? Soon you can skip that altogether, as long as you can speak English properly.

This is thanks to a new iPhone application that Promptu, a talk-and-type mobile phone application developer, introduced Monday called ShoutOUT. The application is going to be the first voice-to-SMS application for iPhone users in the United States.

The application lets you dictate text messages instead of typing on the iPhone's touch-screen keypad. It also allows for checking the transcribed messages for errors and make corrections if necessary before sending them out … Read more

QT: Canon PowerShot SX1 IS

Since it's only about 6 months old, the higher-end SX10 IS doesn't get replaced, it gets a pricier buddy. The SX1 IS actually shipped last September in Europe, and I guess Canon USA finally decided we colonials were worthy of this higher-end model. Though it's 10 megapixels like the SX10, it uses a CMOS chip instead of a CCD; one of the resulting benefits of that is support for 1080p movie capture. Since the sensors are the same size, the 20X zoom lens covers the same focal range: 28-560mm-equivalent. The SX1 offers another perk over the SX10: … Read more

$1 homemade speakers: Doable?

The Audiophiliac's primary mission is turning readers on to high-quality audio products and great music, but today, it's more about super lo-fi.

Google's YouTube has loads of wacky videos on how to make cheap speakers. Check out my favorite so far, "How to Create a High-Def Speaker for Under a Buck," right. It doesn't work, but it's the most entertaining.

After that, watch "Attempting to Make a Homemade Speaker for Under a Buck." It's a response to that first one.

If you really want to give speaker building a try, … Read more

Quick Take: Panasonic SDR-S7

An ultracompact camcorder that records its footage to SD and SDHC cards, the slim shooter Panasonic SDR-S7 looks similar to the rugged SW20, though it lacks any waterproof, shockproof, or dustproof attributes. It features a 10x optical zoom lens, a 2.7-inch flip-out LCD screen, and a Quick Start feature that, according to Panasonic, lets it start recording just 0.6 second after opening it.

In all other ways, it's a pretty typical budget SD camcorder. Key specifications:

680,000-pixel 1/6-inch CCD for 340,000-pixel effective video resolution 43.9-439mm-equivalent f1.8-f2.4 10x zoom lens without optical … Read more

Yamaha reinvents the digital piano

Digital pianos aren't new, but Yamaha's Avant Grand is a very different kind of digital piano. Since Yamaha has been making fine "real" pianos for more than 100 years, its knowledge base is deep. Yamaha introduced its first digital piano, the YP-40, in 1983.

The new Avant Grand is a "hybrid," designed to perfectly mimic the touch of an acoustic piano. The Avant Grand not only uses the same key, level, and hammer mechanism of an acoustic piano, but also special embedded speakers recreate the feel of an acoustic piano's keys to the … Read more

Radiohead, Beck, White Stripes live on DVD

I was never much of a fan of music videos or MTV. I couldn't understand why anyone would want to watch a band act out a silly story or lip-sync to a make-believe "performance." Why not just shoot the band playing for real in a studio?

The geniuses at IFC have done just that with Nigel Godrich's "From the Basement" series, which is now coming to DVD. There's an amazing roster of talent to see and hear.

High points include the White Stripes. Jack's wailing vocal acrobatics and scorching guitar riffs bouncing … Read more

Review: iWork 09 Keynote Remote for iPhone and iPod Touch

Apple solved one problem of presenting with Keynote which is a part of iWork 09 by releasing the app Keynote Remote for iPhone and iPod Touch (iTunes Link) for $.99.

We found one thing a bit ironic and that was that the app wasn't free like the iTunes and Apple TV remote application. Especially when you have already paid $79 for iWork 09. Sometimes we just don't know if we'll ever understand Apple's logic behind these decisions.

The app lets you control your Keynote slide presentation that you present from our Apple computer using your iPhone … Read more
