iPhone 5 mockup drawing attention at IFA 2012

The iPhone 5 has materialized at the IFA trade show in Berlin. In mockup form, at least.

The tech-news site GSMIsrael was apparently the first to report on the iPhone 5 mockup, which it claims to have seen courtesy of the CEO of a major cover and case manufacturer. Like just about all the iPhone 5 rumors floating around out there, the mockup is taller than existing iPhones, has a headphone jack on the bottom edge of the phone and features a two-toned backplate.

GSMIsrael didn't identify the case maker that presumably produced the mockup. (Here's a Google-translated versionRead more

More iPad Mini evidence spotted in app logs?

The search for evidence of an upcoming iPad Mini has become worthy of a plot line for one of those forensic investigation shows that make forensic investigation seem a lot more sexy than it surely is.

The latest lead in the case of an Apple slate with a smaller form factor comes in the form of some interesting entries in Instapaper's logs that show devices calling themselves "iPad2,5" and "iPad2,6" accessed the app recently. The most recent 16GB iPad2 now on the market identifies as iPad2,4 when the device interacts with an app.

Marco Arment, developer of the text reader and bookmarking app, speculates that the previously unseen device identifiers could be new GSM or CDMA versions of iPad2,4, but more likely they're the rumored smaller iPad that could be based on the second-generation iPad.… Read more

It clear that the Galaxy Note 2 and Galaxy Camera won't be the last we hear of Samsung in 2012.

Apple lines up suppliers for iPad Mini display, report says

Apple has tapped two companies to produce the display for its iPad Mini, a new report claims.

Apple's current iPad comes with a 9.7-inch screen.

The iPad Mini has reportedly been in the works for a while, though true to form, Apple has yet to confirm the existence of such a device. Still, the rumor mill has kicked it … Read more

Apple's AirPlay tech to work without Wi-Fi, report says

Apple's AirPlay streaming feature could soon work even if your devices are not on the same Wi-Fi network, according to a new report.

In a brief post, The Telegraph says that Apple is at work on a new version of the streaming technology, dubbed "AirPlay Direct," that eschews the need to be on the same local area network.

"The new version will require just speakers or a hi-fi and an iDevice; the iPhone, iPod or iPad would form its own network to allow a direct connection and music playback," The Telegraph says.

The feature is … Read more

Rumor Has It: iPhone 5 and iPad Mini, the Reckoning

It's time to get real: the iPhone 5 is probably almost here. Though Apple hasn't sent out an invitation, the tech world seems united in the belief that the company will hold a huge party on September 12 to reveal a new iPhone to the world. Here is a reason to doubt that assumption: Moscone Center, where Apple has held many major launch events, is fully booked that day for a microbiology conference!

Does that make us think the rumored release date is false? Not necessarily, as Apple could always hold the event here, which is where it … Read more

HTC Proto, if real, won't help HTC regain the Android crown

Rumors of a slightly improved HTC One V recently started leaking online, alongside hints of an HTC fall refresh.

Details for the so-called HTC Proto point to a larger 4.0-inch display and 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor. Nothing major to be sure, but it can't hurt HTC's chances against other models due this year. Additional specifications for the handset fall in line with the One V and should include 512MB RAM, 4GB internal storage, and a 5-megapixel camera.

The first official-looking images of the HTC Proto show a more rounded design, with no signs of the One … Read more
