When managing a personal or community page on Google+ (Android or iOS), you may become curious if the people you follow are also following you back. As an avid Google+ user, I've seen people complain about the asynchronous following method, while others sing its praises. However, if you're really trying to do some self- or brand-promotion, you probably want to know when followers lose their interest.
Months before Google unveiled its new Chromecast media hub, the company was privately showing around another type of Internet-to-television streaming device, according to a report.
The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that during this year's Consumer Electronics Show in January, former Google executive Andy Rubin gave demonstrations of an Android-powered set-top box. This device was integrated with Google Hangouts and also had a video camera and motion sensor.
Apparently, the prototype digital-media hub had a wide array of features. In Rubin's demonstrations, he reportedly said the device could stream YouTube videos, as well as movies and TV shows … Read more
Google's Chromecast turns me on, but it doesn't really compel me as I've got several streaming solutions in my home. At least, that's what I thought until I read Thursday that Chromecast can play video files on any computer connected to the streaming dongle.
This is huge news for those who thought Chromecast is just another glorified streamer.… Read more
It appears the world's biggest moneymakers are paying increasing attention to social media.
A new report by the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth takes a look at how often companies on Fortune Magazine's Fortune 500 list are using social-media sites like Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Instagram, YouTube, Foursquare, and Pinterest. And the answer is: a lot.
Of those Fortune 500 companies, 77 percent keep active Twitter accounts, 70 percent have a Facebook page, and 69 percent have YouTube accounts. All these stats are up over last year -- with 4 percent more companies keeping Twitter accounts, 4 percent more having … Read more
When fast-food chain Chipotle sent out a series of confusing and nonsensical tweets Sunday, it was clear the company's Twitter account had been hacked.
In fact, the chain even sent out a final tweet at the end of the day saying, "Sorry all. We had a little problem with our account. But everything is back on track now!"
However, it seemed strange when no hackers stepped forward to claim responsibility for working to topple the restaurant's Twitter feed. But it turns out that was because it was Chipotle itself that staged the hack.
That's right, … Read more
Welcome to today's psychological survey.
We are here to discover your attitude toward your exes. Yes, we know you have more than one. We've heard the number is in the double digits, actually.
So: Do you keep the texts you exchanged? Are you still Facebook friends? If you're not, do you creep around social media to see what they're doing and whom they're seeing?
Do you occasionally sit there late at night with your new (and perhaps temporary) lover, secretly pleased that your ex just texted you, wondering how you are? … Read more
People don't seem as happy with social media sites and search engines, and advertising could be the culprit, at least according to one new study.
Released Tuesday in partnership with analytics firm ForeSee, the American Customer Satisfaction Index's E-business report gave search engines, social networks, and news sites a collective satisfaction grade of 71.3 out of 100. The score was 3.9 percent lower than last year's score and the lowest seen by the ACSI since 2002.
To explain the drop, the ACSI pinned part of the blame on online advertising. Among those surveyed, 22 percent … Read more
Netflix Netflix needs little in the way of introduction as the app for iOS that lets subscribers watch movies and TV shows on the service's Instant Watch library. While the streaming service isn't nearly as strong as the Netflix DVD library, it's great to have the option to pick from several shows to watch on an iOS device wherever you are.
The Netflix app's straightforward design starts off with a home screen that shows your most recently viewed and incomplete shows at the top for easy access, then featured content like Top Picks and popular shows. … Read more
Newer versions of Chrome spruce up the New Tab page by adding some shortcuts to your most-visited Web sites or Chrome apps. A previous extension I wrote about, New Tab Page adds the weather, some headlines, and links to Chrome apps. Onefeed does all of this, plus a custom newsfeed and social media updates from Facebook, Google+, Twitter, and Instagram. You can also attach your Dropbox account, if you really want to.
