Two LFs: Lexus concept cars

Lexus kept its floor area at the 2007 Tokyo auto show fairly clear, letting the cars speak for themselves as it were. And the two Lexus concepts, the LF-Xh and the LF-A, certainly had a lot to say. The LF-Xh is a continuation of the trend for road-going, SUV-bodied cars that stress performance, like the BMW X6 concept we saw at the Frankfurt auto show earlier this year. The LF-Xh looks like a squashed RX 400h, and that squashing made it angry. Note the "h" on "Xh"--it denotes that the concept is a hybrid, using … Read more

Toyota lets loose Lexus concept car details

As far as we now know, Lexus plans to unveil two concept and six production vehicles at the 2007 Tokyo auto show, which opens in late October.

The Lexus concept cars that will be on display: the LF-Xh and the LF-A.

THe LF-A, a two-seater sports car, features a V10 engine and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) body.

The LF-Xh, as you can see, is slightly similar in looks to the Lexus IS-F that debuted at the Detroit auto show earlier this year.

The LF-Xh is an all-wheel-drive, hybrid-electric vehicle with a V6 gas engine. The vehicle promises "outstanding … Read more

Lexus getting into the aftermarket business

Now here's a teaser. We got an e-mail from Lexus' PR firm this week informing us that Lexus is going to be debuting a "new performance accessory line" at this year's SEMA show. Like the rest of the automotive world, we are already salivating at the prospect of the IS-F sedan, which will be coming to our shores next January, but the press release's headline suggested that Lexus will offering tuner kits and the like to those who don't have $60,000 to drop on a factory-pimped model.

The trouble is, despite the alluring … Read more

Cars in '08 to be most wired ever

A survey released today says the 2008 model year will yield the highest percentage of gadget-filled cars in history.

The study, conducted by Telematics Research Group (TRG) and based on 100 cars announced for the 2008 model year, says almost 70 percent of cars for sale in North America will offer voice-activated, hands-free Bluetooth phone support. Navigation systems will come standard in 80 percent of announced MY08 models.

Portable music player support will also be at an all-time high. According to TRG's Technology Availability Index, 50 percent of cars will have direct iPod connectivity, and 90 percent will have … Read more

We preview the 2008 Lexus LS 600h

Do you have a private jet that you use to fly you and your dog around the world? Then how about a 65-foot sailing yacht that you take down to the Caribbean? These were a few of the images Lexus showed to indicate what kind of buyer the company has in mind for its 2008 Lexus LS 600h L, so if you answered no to the above questions, this car may not be for you.

Based on the LS 460 L, the LS 600h L is a big, luxury sedan with a hybrid powertrain, and Lexus is positioning the car … Read more

World Car of the Year

While still fairly new, the car industry is taking a cue from Hollywood and ending the car show season with an awards ceremony.

Comparable to what the Golden Globes means for film, the World Car of the Year Awards are voted on by 44 automotive journalists in 22 countries through secret ballot. (The actual awards are giant gold spheres on a pedestal.)

This year the World Car of the Year (think Best Motion Picture), went to the Lexus LS 460, which beat out the Audi TT and the Mini Cooper, as well as seven other nominees. (It should be noted … Read more

Our new perfect 10 - Lexus LS 600h

We generated a little controversy last year at CNET Car Tech by rating the Lexus LS 460L a perfect 10. Subsequently, the LS 460L also won our Tech Car of the Year award. Lexus shows off a cutaway model of what's likely to be this year's perfect 10 at the 2007 Geneva Auto Show, the Lexus LS 600h. This car takes the LS 460 and simply adds a hybrid system, increasing drivetrain power and efficiency. Lexus is using the Geneva show to push its hybrids in the European market, showing off and advertising its RX 400h and GS … Read more

'Minority Report' Lexus on eBay

If you're not interested in going back to the future by splashing out on a new DeLorean DMC-12, then you might consider bringing the future back home with you by bidding on eBay Motors for a copy of the futuristic Lexus that Tom Cruise thrashed around in the movie Minority Report.

According to the seller, the 2054 model-year car, which is one of only three made by Lexus, is about the same size as a Chrysler 300 and has only 38 miles on it since it was built. Curiously, it boasts a six-cylinder Chevy engine--which is 47,000 miles … Read more

LA Auto Show or bust

CHUALAR, CA: So here we are on the road to the 2007 LA Auto show. We decided to drive down from CNET's office in San Francisco for a couple of reasons: first, we get to take all of the contraband travel accessories we would have had to forego had we flown (knives, guns, all-in-one shampoo and hair conditioner); and second, because we have a compelling reason to stay on the road in the shape of the new Lexus LS 460L. We had a look at this car earlier in the year at a press launch in San Francisco, but … Read more

Talk the talk without buying a Lexus

Like the integrated Bluetooth hands-free calling interface in a Lexus, but don't have a Lexus? Johnson Controls, the company that supplies Toyota Motor Corporation with its fancy Bluetooth technology, is making the same system available as an aftermarket install. The BlueConnect module fits in the hole that you (or professional installers) will have to cut out of your car's roof, and it enables drivers to make and receive calls via their paired-up Bluetooth phones with the push of a button. The device supports voice dialing, can store more than 1,000 phone book entries, and is yours for $… Read more
