Sizing up the iPhone 5: The screen

All signs point to a taller screen for the iPhone 5. For many, that alone will redefine Apple's iconic phone.

Probably more than any other single hardware feature, Retina screens are what consumers of the iPhone and iPad are focusing on these days -- not to mention Apple marketing folks.

And Apple won't disappoint with the iPhone 5. 9to5Mac says the taller screen will boast a resolution of 640-by-1,136. (iPhone 4 and 4S are 640-by-960.)

Those tweaks will yield a resolution "very close to a 16:9 screen ratio, so this means 16:9 videos can play full screen at their native aspect ratio,&… Read more

Jobs' 'thermonuclear war' quote fair game in court, judge says

Controversial quotes made by late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs last year claiming Google's Android operating system was a "wholesale" rip-off will be fair game as evidence in court, a judge said this week.

"I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple's $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong," Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson, in the book, which hit shelves last October.

"I'm going to destroy Android, because it's a stolen product. I'm willing to go thermonuclear war … Read more

The hero of the week's big tech confab: Steve Jobs

All Things D's D10 conference featured interviews with powerful and innovative people, not just from technology but also politics, entertainment, and education. Yet presiding over them all, it seemed, there was one giant whose work touched everybody there: Steve Jobs.

The late Apple co-founder's presence was not hard to miss, as other writers like Steven Levy of Wired and Nick Wingfield of The New York Times, noted previously.

The conference (full coverage) kicked off with an interview of Steve Jobs' designated successor, Tim Cook. He took pains to remind people, with words, effect, and attitude, that while he … Read more

Execs remember Steve Jobs as a tireless perfectionist

Two Silicon Valley executives who worked closely with Steve Jobs over the years shared some of their memories of the late Apple co-founder today, painting a picture of Jobs as a tireless perfectionist who learned from his mistakes.

"Steve would translate good ideas into a finished product unlike anyone in the industry," Oracle CEO Larry Ellison said during an onstage discussion at the D10 conference in Palos Verdes, Calif. (See live blog.) Ellison likened Jobs to Henry Ford in the way he changed the industry. "That was Steve, until it was perfect. And then once it was … Read more

Google fills search with Zagat ratings

It's time to rate your world on Google+ Local, double down on secrets and lose the hashbang:

Apple CEO Tim Cook shared some interesting comments at the D10 conference Tuesday. To summarize, Cook didn't say if Apple was working on a television set, he vowed that the company will "double down" on … Read more

Sorkin: Writing about Jobs is like writing about The Beatles

Screenwriter Aaron Sorkin says that writing the screenplay for the upcoming biopic of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs is a lot like trying to write about The Beatles.

Speaking at the D10 Conference today, the award-winning screenwriter and producer said he's currently at the "earliest possible stage" of putting together the screenplay for the feature film, and that it's not just as simple as sitting down with the source material.

"What I'll do is go through a long period that would not look to any casual observer like writing," Sorkin jokingly told interviewer … Read more

Cook: Steve Jobs was a notorious flip-flopper

Steve Jobs was a hard man to pin down, according to Tim Cook, his successor as Apple chief executive.

"He would flip on something so fast that you would forget that he was the one taking the 180 [degree], polar position on it the day before," Cook said this evening during an onstage interview at the D10 conference in Palos Verdes, Calif. (see video below). "It was an art; he would never know that he fought the opposite. I saw it daily."

But Cook also called this tendency a "gift," pointing out that "… Read more

Tim Cook: 'I've never really felt the weight of trying to be Steve'

In a live interview at the D10 conference tonight in Palos Verdes, Calif., Apple CEO Tim Cook was asked once again what it's like to fill Steve Jobs' shoes.

"Steve was a genius and a visionary, and I've never viewed that my role was to replace him," said Cook. "Steve was an original. I've never really felt the weight of trying to be Steve. It's not my goal in life. I am who I am. I am focused on that. On being a great CEO of Apple."

He was further asked with … Read more
