iPhone 3GS jailbreak, 'purplera1n,' hits Web

Just as America gears up to celebrate Independence Day comes news that iPhone 3GS owners are getting some freedom of their own.

George Hotz, who you may recall as the teenage hacker who originally unlocked the iPhone, has let loose a jailbreaking app for the iPhone 3GS code-named purplera1n. It enables the installation of third-party software not approved for Apple's App Store.

For now, purplera1n is Windows-only (but not Windows 7) and requires the latest iTunes installed, as well as an iPhone 3GS with the 3.0 firmware. In a Friday blog post titled "I make it ra1n,&… Read more

iPhone OS 3.0 unlock released, excludes 3GS

The iPhone hacking group known as the Dev-Team has released UltraSn0w, an unlocking utility for 2G and 3G iPhones running iPhone OS 3.0. The new utility is easy to use and lets you unlock your jailbroken iPhone for use on a variety of carriers (such as T-Mobile or AT&T in the U.S.). However, it does not support the iPhone 3GS at this time, but, according to the Dev-Team, future releases will support the new hardware.

Dev Team shows iPhone 3G carrier unlock, release scheduled for Friday

Apple is set to release their newest iPhone firmware (version 3.0) at any moment and the geniuses at the Dev-Team have an iPhone 3G unlock ready to go.

The iPhone Dev Team blog has a video of the ultrasn0w demo running on the iPhone 3.0 software. The yellowsn0w carrier unlock will be demoed as well when Apple officially releases the 3.0 OS. The PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools continue to jailbreak all of the Dev Team's tested devices running the 3.0 OS on iTunes 8.2.

The Dev-Team does not know if the new iPhone 3G … Read more

iPhone 3G S jailbreaking prohibited by Apple terms of service

Apple is making it clear that the company does not support jailbreaking. Its iPhone 3G S terms of service, displayed on the iPhone 3G vs. 3G S comparison page, spell out the restriction:

1. ...Use constitutes acceptance of Apple's software license agreement and third-party terms located in the iPhone box. Unauthorized modification of your iPhone software violates the software license agreement. Inability to use an iPhone due to unauthorized modifications is not covered under your warranty.

However, we also know that the iPhone Dev-Team claims to already have iPhone OS 3.0 jailbroken. (It remains to be seen whether … Read more

iTunes 8.2 breaks jailbreaking

Apple recently released iTunes 8.2 and, as expected, the update disables jailbreaking. As a result, the iPhone Dev Team issued a warning to users about updating:

This update is one of those that incidentally breaks QuickPwn and PwnageTool. It doesn't seem like an anti-jailbreak. But nonetheless, it will break your ability to re-run QuickPwn or PwnageTool's dfu-entry.

The iPhone Dev Team has a fix planned, but it will not be available until Apple publicly releases Firmware 3.0.

How to make SlingPlayer Mobile work over 3G

It's bad enough that Sling Media charges $29.99 for its SlingPlayer Mobile app (which you can see demonstrated in the video at right), but limiting it to Wi-Fi connections? That's downright criminal.

Fortunately, the gadget gurus over at Gizmodo have documented a way to stream SlingPlayer video across 3G connections, thereby overcoming one of the app's major annoyances. (Now if they could just talk Sling Media into a reasonable price tag. Like, say, $5.99.)

As you might expect, there's a catch: You have to jailbreak your iPhone. It's not hard to do, particularly … Read more

iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 jailbroken

If you blinked again, you might have missed it: several days after Apple released an update to the iPhone OS 3 beta, hackers have already jailbroken the OS 3 beta 3 release.

A new version of QuickPWN for Windows only (direct download link) has been released. This version should work with all versions of the iPhone or the iPod Touch. We have not yet tried the jailbreak, but our sources have not reported any trouble with the hack. (As usual, however, download and use QuickPWN at your own risk.)

Jailbreaking is competitive in the hacking community. The Dev Team, the … Read more

iPhone SDK agreement prohibits jailbreaking

Apple is firing with both barrels this week, introducing surprising changes to the iPhone Developer Program License Agreement.

The agreement that all iPhone developers are required to adhere to now explicitly disallows jailbreaking, doing anything that assists with jailbreaking, or developing and distributing jailbreak applications--a big change from an agreement that previously restricted creation of applications that violated privacy or aided in violating criminal or intellectual property laws.

Ars Technica was able to obtain a copy of the new updated agreement that stated:

(e)You will not, through use of the Apple Software, services or otherwise, create any Application or … Read more
