CES: Huawei Ideos X5 runs stock Android

LAS VEGAS--Just as we reported yesterday, Huawei introduced a new phone for the U.S. market at this year's CES, the Huawei Ideos X5. This midrange Android handset is no stranger; it's already been released in Asia. The U.S. timetable is much murkier--Huawei is keeping the U.S. launch date, carrier, and price under wraps until later this month.

In that sense, the specs are no surprise. The slim, trim Ideos X5 has a nice 3.8-inch screen with a WVGA display (800x480 pixels). It looked bright in our hands and we liked the dark gray brushed … Read more

Huawei introducing Ideos X5 Android phone

LAS VEGAS--Huawei will be pushing further into U.S. markets this week at CES. The mobile phone maker is expected to introduce the Android-powered Huawei Ideos X5 tomorrow, the first official day of the yearly ginormous electronics show.

The Ideos X5 runs Android 2.2 (Froyo), with solid midrange specs. It has a 3.8-inch touch-screen display (800x480 pixels) and an 800MHz Qualcomm processor, Engadget reports. We're also looking at a 5-megapixel camera that captures 720p HD video and a VGA front-facing camera. Higher-end Android smartphones are routinely showing 1.3-megapixel shooters on the front.

Cricket launches budget Android handset

Cricket Wireless continued its dive into Android today with the announcement of the Huawei Ascend. The Ascend is the prepaid carrier's second Android smartphone after the Sanyo Zio, which went on sale last month.

Positioned as a low-cost device, the Ascend won't wow in the features department, but it comes with all the usual Android offerings, such as Wi-Fi, a 3.2-megapixel camera, an MP3 player, Bluetooth, a MicroSD card slot, and support for the carrier's 3G EV-DO network. We're glad to see that it runs Android 2.1 (Eclair) rather than the 1.6 version … Read more

Huawei could bring IDEOS to T-Mobile

Chinese handset maker Huawei is in talks to bring its newly announced IDEOS smartphone to T-Mobile, according to the Wall Street Journal. The paper says Huawei has been negotiating with each of the four major carriers to crack the U.S. smartphone market.

The T-Mobile deal could reportedly be finalized in the next four to six weeks. Huawei and T-Mobile UK already have an Android-based relationship overseas with phones like the pay-as-you-go Pulse and Pulse Mini.

Personally, I'd love to see this come to fruition. When it comes to Android, the prepaid segment has yet to be tapped. T-Mobile'… Read more

Huawei announces affordable Android 2.2-powered IDEOS

As expected, Huawei unveiled an Android 2.2 smartphone Thursday at the IFA trade show in Berlin.

Dubbed the IDEOS (Industrial Design Evolution Operating System), we're looking at an entry-level device with a 2.8-inch (240x320) touch display and 528MHz processor. There's also a 3.2-megapixel camera, a 3.5mm headphone jack, and an microSD slot.

Though this certainly isn't the most powerful stuff on the market, Huawei could be forgiven, thanks to the handset's expected $150 to $200 price tag (that's unlocked and in U.S. dollars).

Huawei's LTE rides the ultra-fast rails

Representatives from network gear supplier Huawei demonstrated last week the company's Long Term Evolution (LTE) mobile broadband running on the super-fast "maglev" train.

The train runs on a magnetic levitation track that stretches for about 19 miles from the center of the Shanghai district of Pudong, China, out to Pudong International Airport. The train reaches a maximum speed about 267 miles per hour and a trip from end to end takes about seven minutes and 20 seconds.

Huawei said the LTE network installed along the track will give passengers maximum uplink speeds of 50Mbps with a 99.… Read more

Huawei shows new Android phones

BARCELONA, Spain--Though it's been building its reputation in the last few months with models like the T-Mobile Tap and the Huawei M750, Chinese manufacturer Huawei doesn't have a huge presence in the United States. It takes a visit to its stand at Mobile World Congress to show what the company has up its sleeve.

Like everywhere else in Barcelona, Google Android took center stage for Huawei. The company didn't stage a low-put press event--and we thank them for that--but it rolled out four new Android phones. Here are the basics, and be sure to check out our … Read more

Huawei's touch-screen M750

Huawei is mostly known as a basic handset manufacturer here in the U.S., but the Chinese company has ventured out recently with more advanced devices like the T-Mobile Tap and this Huawei M750 from MetroPCS. The Huawei M750 is a full touch-screen phone with a 1.3-megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth, a microSD card slot, and a virtual QWERTY keyboard. We don't know too much about the Huawei M750's pricing or availability just yet, so stay tuned for that.

T-Mobile unveils pay-as-you-go Android phone

T-Mobile has demonstrated the first pay-as-you-go Android handset to go on sale in the UK.

The Pulse, which is manufactured by Huawei, was announced on Thursday. Huawei is best known in the UK for manufacturing mobile broadband dongles for operators such as T-Mobile, and the Pulse marks its entry into the British handset market.

"The T-Mobile Pulse represents another Android milestone from T-Mobile," said Nicola Shenton, who currently heads the operator's handset business in the UK, in a statement. "We introduced the first Android handset, the T-Mobile G1, to the UK back in October 2008, launched … Read more
