Useful form filling program

Form Pilot Pro lets users complete forms--both paper and electronic--without using a typewriter or doing it by hand. The program takes a bit of getting used to, but users with frequent form-filling needs will find it quite beneficial.

The program's interface is somewhat intuitive, and much of the toolbar will be familiar to users who are experienced with Word. Some of the important functions, however, are not readily apparent. Users will eventually find answers in the built-in Help file, although it could be better organized. We tested Form Pilot Pro with a PDF file from a government Web site. … Read more

Documents To Go for iPhone: First Look video

Documents To Go (with and without support for Microsoft Exchange attachments) is one of our favorite applications for turning your iPhone into a home office. But it's not anywhere near complete and it has some formidable competition in the form of Quickoffice Mobile Suite, another premium offering.

If you're in the market for a document editor and creator, this video will give you a peep at what Documents To Go can offer in its first application release.

Apple updates heat advisory for iPhone 3GS

Last week, Apple revised a support document about iPhone temperature to include the iPhone 3GS. The June 25 document cautions iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users to operate their handsets within acceptable temperatures. It makes the following recommendations:

Recommended operating temperatures Operate iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between zero and 35 degrees Celsius (32 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit). Low or high-temperature conditions might temporarily shorten battery life or cause the device to temporarily stop working properly.

Recommended storage temperatures Store iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS in a place where the temperature is between -20 and 45 degrees Celsius (-4 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit). Don't leave the device in your car, because temperatures in parked cars can exceed this range.

Smooth PDF creator

Quick All to PDF helps users convert files into PDF format. Sporting a very simple format and very impressive results, users will have no problem overlooking some of the quirks that come with this program.

Users will need to look at the Getting Started Web site, which automatically appears when this program is downloaded. Beginning the conversion process is unlike similar programs we have tested and anyone ignoring these quick instructions will be confused. Beyond this, though, the program interface was highly intuitive, guiding us every step of the way. Converting a Word doc, Excel file, or other item to … Read more

Turn your iPhone into a home office

Up until last week, Quickoffice Mobile Office Suite was the most sophisticated Microsoft document reader and editor in the App Store. When Documents To Go came out (with and without support for Microsoft Exchange attachments,) some of you asked for a head-to-head comparison.

We'll see your request and raise it to a collection of business applications for the iPhone and iPod Touch that can help keep you productive at home or on the road.

Quickoffice versus Documents To Go

The starkest differences between Quickoffice Mobile Suite and Documents To Go boil down to price, file support, and interface. Both … Read more

Reliable file backup

This free backup program lets you create and schedule backups using WinRAR. We were unable to get its promised drag-and-drop functionality to work, but it still proved to be a worthy backup program.

BackUp for WinRAR's main user interface is pretty self-explanatory, although we had to hover our mouse over a few of the toolbar commands buttons to learn their function. The program already includes a preset for backing up your registry. But creating a new preset task was not as intuitive as the rest of the program and required a visit to the Help menu. All of our … Read more

Apple details the basics of Push Notification in iPhone OS 3.0

Apple released a new support document detailing the basics of Apple's Push Notification Service in iPhone OS 3.0. You can read more about this service in our previous post here.

According to the support document:

If you don't have an option for Notifications in the Settings menu, then you don't have an app installed that supports notifications.

An app needs to be used at least once before it will receive any notifications.

The iPod Touch can receive notifications any time when the screen is on and Wi-Fi is connected. If the screen is asleep, the iPod … Read more

See docs, attachments clearly

When it comes to faithfully viewing and rendering a Microsoft Office or iWork document on your iPhone or iPod Touch, Documents To Go quickly proves its competence by delivering crisp, clear reproductions of your Word, PowerPoint, PDF, and Excel documents. We love being able to create, edit, save, and send Microsoft Word documents with the application's formatting tools--including Apple's cross-app copy/paste, font and paragraph style, and lists, among others. However, until Documents To Go also bestows editing tools onto the other commonly used file types the app can view, it will remain an incomplete business tool.

Hands-on: Documents To Go's iPhone Exchange

Documents To Go is such an excellent business tool for viewing and editing documents on other mobile platforms, we were excited to see it emerge in the iTunes App Store earlier this week. We talked about the more basic version of Documents To Go for iPhone (and iPod Touch; $4.99) here, which lets you create and edit Microsoft Word apps, and additionally displays Excel, PowerPoint, PDFs, and iWork files.

Quite a few users, however, had trouble with the more advanced version, Documents To Go with Exchange Attachments. This version essentially adds an in-app Exchange in-box that asks you to … Read more
