Dual-boot Windows and Linux, step 1: Get Ubuntu

This is the year I kiss Windows good-bye. Well, maybe not entirely, but the writing is on the wall for Microsoft's flagship operating system, and all other desktop bloatware: The future of PC software is open source. (I'll add that the future of PC applications is on the Web, which I'll cover once we've got Ubuntu in place.)

Being the belts-and-suspenders type, I'll make the conversion from proprietary to open in baby steps, the first of which is to get a copy of Ubuntu 7.1 (a.k.a. Gutsy Gibbon), the version of Linux … Read more

McAfee overpaid big time for SafeBoot

While we East Coast folks celebrated Columbus Day, McAfee announced its acquisition of privately held SafeBoot for $350 million. SafeBoot provides software for file and full disk encryption.

Now, I certainly understand the rationale behind this deal. McAfee can now bundle encryption software into its PC security software and integrate key management into its ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO). We saw this same market consolidation pattern a few years ago with antispyware, which went from a stand-alone product to an integrated feature in endpoint security suites. In that transition, CA bought antispyware vendor Pest Patrol, while Microsoft grabbed Giant. Obviously, the same … Read more

Adventures in Boot Camp: Part 2

Well, I'm writing this on Firefox on my new 50GB (assigned) Vista box -- the iMac. Yes sir (or ma'am), this beautiful new iMac is running both Windows and Mac OS X quite well.

I was quite impressed by the ease of installation and Vista actually installed quite well too. All in all -- after just twenty minutes of running Vista on my new Mac -- I'm quite impressed with both operating systems and especially Boot Camp.

Look for a pretty serious hands-on with this new iMac on Friday.

Oh and in case you're wondering about … Read more

Adventures in Boot Camp: Part 1

OK, so I bought the new 24-inch iMac yesterday at the Apple Store and I'm in the process of getting it ready for some serious use. Now, as I've mentioned before, I own a Vista box and an old Compaq laptop besides my MacBook, Mac Mini and now, the iMac. But, for the first time, I will be installing Windows on an Apple box with the help of Boot Camp and report here how it went.

So far, I've downloaded the Boot Camp software and have my Windows Vista Ultimate in waiting next to me. Next, I … Read more

Upgrading to Parallels Desktop 3.0

When I got this MacBook Pro (MBP), with its 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, back in November, one of the reasons for upgrading was the availability of Parallels Desktop 2.5. The Parallels software runs Microsoft's Windows XP or Vista in a virtual-machine environment. You get the Windows desktop in a window on your Mac desktop, so both environments are available at the same time. The Windows hard disk can be created as a file in your Mac filesystem, so you don't waste much disk space.

There's also Apple's own Boot Camp, which lets … Read more

Permission to board the simulator

Battle stations! The U.S. Navy has upped the stakes in the battle of the training simulators with the commissioning of its 550-foot USS Trayer Battle Stations 21.

The Trayer, dry-docked at a mock pier in the $82.5 million USS Iowa training complex in Great Lakes, Ill., simulates an Arleigh-Burke-class destroyer and some of the adventure and hard work that goes with sailing the Seven Seas.

BTS 21 is part of a 10-year, $763 million "recapitalization" of training facilities that will set new standards in simulation technology by using video screens, smells, vibrations and sound effects to … Read more
