The new face of the notebook market

With HP's decision to release a slew of new laptops that offer a slick design and nice specs, it had me thinking: is this the new face of the notebook market? Are notebooks becoming commodities that can be differentiated only by design?

And if all of that is true, what will happen to brand loyalty? Is it another victim of this vicious battle?

I think it is.… Read more

Once you go Mac

I sold and bought my first PC a long, long time ago. Back in the late 80s I owned a Mac, I think it was a Mac2. I honestly thought there would never come a time where I would buy a Mac. Ever.

Then I upgraded my PC to Vista. What a disaster. I had grown accustomed to my PC freezing every now and then. Enter Vista and my PC was frozen more often than it was working. The biggest culprit was MicroSoft Outlook.

The application has to have a memory leak. I could follow memory numbers as they grew … Read more

Why Apple isn't selling more Macs

There is an interesting article in the New York Times today (September 16th) that anyone involved with personal computers should read. It's called "A Window of Opportunity for Macs, Soon to Close" and it was written by Randall Stross, a professor of business at San Jose State University.

The main point of the article is that Apple should be selling many more Macintosh computers than it is. I agree completely.

The author points out that the release of an obviously half-baked version of Vista provided Apple with a golden opportunity to sell computers to people who don'… Read more

Photos: Apple iPod Touch

Apple's latest iPod Touch is finally joining the iPod Nano and iPod Classic in stores this weekend. I'll be working on getting a full review together for next week. In the meantime, take a look through our iPod Touch photo gallery. If that's not enough to quench your iPod thirst, then head over to CNET's iPod Central for all our iPod-related news.

Getting touchy with the newest iPod

Apple's iPod Touch has made it into the wild and folks are finding lots of little details to note about Cupertino's latest addition to the iPod lineup.

First off, the hacks that work on the iPhone to add additional software don't appear to be working on the iPod Touch, though many in the macosphere expressed hope that it's just a temporary setback.

Second, a few people say that, rather than running Mac OS X, they got a device that only runs diagnostics. That's no fun when it comes to music playing, but folks are playing … Read more

Apple details $100 iPhone credit

Apple even finds a hip way to make amends.

The company will send a $100 store credit for early iPhone buyers directly as an SMS text message to the iPhone. To be eligible, the phone must have been purchased before August 22 and service needs to be activated on the device to claim the credit.

The move is aimed at placating early iPhone buyers irked by the fact Apple shaved $200 off the price of the gadget roughly two months after its introduction.

Devices purchased between August 22 and September 4 are eligible to get $200 refunded because of Apple'… Read more

How to get your iCredit for your iPhone

I was one of the first guys out of the gate with an iPhone. I even waited in line for two hours on launch day. Then, a few months later, Steve Jobs drops the price $200. I have to admit, I was a little upset with the quick price drop, but then I heard there was a $100 store credit toward the purchase of any product at an Apple Retail Store or the Apple Online Store for anyone who bought an iPhone at full price (before Sept. 5).

If you're wondering how to get your iPhone credit, it's … Read more

Desktop design: Apple vs. Sony

It's likely that more than a few would-be Mac buyers who decided that for whatever reason they couldn't part with Windows ended up with a VAIO. All PC manufacturers place an importance on design, of course, but no two more than Apple and Sony. Both companies recently put out updates to their all-in-one and small-form-factor systems. Let's take a look at how they compare.

Apple's latest iMac effort returns the shape and stand of the previous iteration but adds an anodized aluminum finish to the enclosure and a glossy glass panel to the display. The case … Read more

Microsoft getting snotty with Apple's Safari

Apple is trying to make its Safari browser relevant to the Windows platform. According to early reports, however, Microsoft disagrees, leaving Hotmail users (who still uses Hotmail????) stranded:

Recent changes to Microsoft's Hotmail service appears to have left Safari-using Mac users out of luck. Currently, logging into Hotmail with a Safari browser causes an infinite redirect loop (or stops when Safari has said "enough redirects!").

Microsoft is big on interoperability, Apple. Try entering into a(nother) patent agreement with the company. That seems to do the trick.

One week with Zonbu

After my July 26 post about the inexpensive Linux-based PC called Zonbu, I was contacted by a public-relations agent working for the company.

He put me in touch with Zonbu CEO Gregoire Gentil, and I met with Gentil on August 22, prompting another blog post on the topic of flash drives.

Last week, I received the loaner system Gentil promised me, and I've been using it since. (It's small enough to be shipped in a standard U.S. Priority Mail box.)

On Wednesday, I read an article by Walt Mossberg of The Wall Street Journal. The piece's title conveys the subject as well as Mossberg's… Read more
