Being a native New Yorker, I've seen a lot of knock-off products, such as designer clothes, bags, fragrances, watches, DVDs, and even sneakers. But I had no idea cell phones were a part of the list of bootleg products.
According to Phone Scoop and RCR Wireless News, federal authorities in New York have uncovered nearly 20,000 counterfeit phones, many of them posing as popular brand names from major handset manufacturers. The phones were seized in March 2008 from a company called Perfect Connection, located in Queens, N.Y. Among the counterfeit handsets were 5,503 Sony Ericsson, 5,… Read more
Motorola is getting close to hiring someone to head up its soon-to-be-spun-off handset division, according to a story in The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday.
Hewlett-Packard executive Todd Bradley has emerged as one of two final candidates for the position, according to the article, which cited sources close to the situation. The newspaper reported that the other person under consideration for the position is a top telecom executive whose identity is still unknown.
Motorola's Good Technology group hopes its latest update will eliminate the moment of terror experienced by a traveling salesperson who realizes the slide deck got left back at the office.
Good 6.0 will now allow Windows Mobile smartphone users to access corporate applications and their companies' shared network resources over the same secure connection that delivers their e-mail. This would eliminate the need for VPN (virtual private network) software on smartphones, said Dan Rudolph, director of product marketing for Good.
If you use a Motorola Razr cell phone, don't accept JPEGs from strangers.
A vulnerability has been discovered in the phones that could allow a hacker to send a corrupt JPEG image via Multimedia Messaging Service that could be leveraged to run malicious code on the phone. However, you would have to accept the image for download before that could happen.
The specific flaw exists in the JPEG thumbprint component of the EXIF parser, according to an advisory released by security firm TippingPoint's Zero Day Initiative on Tuesday.
"Although the possibility of this vulnerability occurring is very … Read more

The latest executive to leave Motorola: Rich Nottenburg, chief strategy and technology officer.
The doors of the cell phone maker's executive offices seem to have been revolving nonstop since activist investor Carl Icahn, who took a leading role in the Microsoft-Yahoo merger fracas late this week, began his successful pursuit of Motorola board seats.
Nottenburg's departure, announced on Thursday to employees in an internal memo, according to Motorola spokeswoman Jennifer Erickson, follows the replacements of CEO Ed Zander in January, acting CFO Tom Meredith in February, and mobile-devices head Stu Reed and marketing head Casey Keller in March, … Read more
Of all the major car companies that have co-branded phones, Ferrari seems to have the most versions, flags-down--and it can't seem to make up its mind on which one it likes best.
Last year luxury phone maker Vertu announced its "Ascent Ferrari 1947 Limited Edition" just months after the "Razr Maxx V6 Ferrari Challenge Mobile Phone" was unveiled. Now it's apparently come full circle back to Motorola with its "V9 Ferrari Edition."
At the risk of suffering Razr fatigue, as Techie Diva says, the latest model doesn't look all that different … Read more
Instead of making the mistake of giving Mom the Wii Fit or a gratuitous kitchen gadget for Mother's Day, try to remember that exercising and cooking may not be her only concerns in life. There are other alternatives, for example, like a stylish Bluetooth headset.
Chip Chip finds this Motorola H680 model particularly feminine and, shockingly, not even pink. This floral "frost"-finished device lists 8 hours of talk time, a charger, and a carrying case. But if you do get one for Mom, be prepared for some snide comments about your rare calls home.
