iPhone to feature special YouTube player

Apple's made it official: the iPhone will have full-blown YouTube integration. According to the iPhone Web site, the much-anticipated handset will include "a special YouTube player that you can launch right from the home screen." iPhone owners can now load and browse videos from the video-sharing site as well as e-mail them to their friends.

This comes less than a month after Steve Jobs announced that the company's Apple TV set-top box would also have built-in integration for the wildly popular YouTube.

The iPhone, as we all know by now, hits stores at 6 PM ET … Read more

Let's do this thing

Well, the Macalope's faithful and well-groomed readers know that he doesn't suffer silly punditry lightly. And this may be only his second post over at his new digs (hey, did you check out the fussball table?!), but let's see if he's become a domesticated animal or if he still rolls the way he used to.

Before linking to the piece in question, let's take a look at a quote.

Apple excels in creative and innovative marketing. Often it's what they don't tell you that creates the most buzz. For example, we know next … Read more

Cell phone love from Asia

If you're a cell phone geek, the annual CommunicAsia cell phone extravaganza is a must on your calendar. Much like 3GSM, which is held every February in Barcelona, ComunicAsia shows off some of the coolest handsets in the world. In fact, it almost makes our U.S. CTIA show look like a third-grade bake sale.

Our colleagues at CNET Asia are on hand in their hometown of Singapore to bring you the hottest sights and sounds form the show floor. Samsung grabbed the spotlight early on with new Ultra Edition phones and several fashion handsets. The Samsung SGH-E950 is … Read more

Jawbone to be sold alongside iPhone

When Apple fans across the country flock to their neighborhood Apple Store to pick up their shiny new iPhone next Friday, they'll also have the opportunity to buy a Jawbone Bluetooth headset to go along with it. That's right; the Aliph Jawbone Bluetooth headset will be sold alongside the iPhone at all Apple Stores (plus Apple's online store) starting June 29, 2007. Designed by Yves Behar and decked out with military-grade noise-canceling technology, the Jawbone is certainly no slouch in the design and performance department, but we can't help but wonder whatever happened to Apple's own Bluetooth headset that Steve Jobs showed at MacWorldRead more

Photos: Sprint Mogul by HTC

It's been a long two years since the Sprint PPC-6700 first debuted, and the smart phone is starting to show its age. Fortunately, Sprint has just released its successor in the Sprint Mogul by HTC. It sports a thinner design and features Windows Mobile 6, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and EV-DO support. Overall, it's a worthy upgrade but we did have some issues with it. Read our full review to get the scoop and click on the image to take a photo tour of the Mogul.

Rating the iPhone's battery life

Apple's new battery ratings for the iPhone certainly look impressive, but is 8 hours of talk time really top of the line as cell phones go? In a press release announcing the new figures, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said that "the iPhone's battery life is longer than any other smart phone and even longer than most MP3 players." That's a broad claim, particularly since that 8 hours is just a promise. In our experience, the rated battery life of a device and the actual battery life can vary, something that Apple acknowledges in the fine … Read more

iPhone apps: Try before you buy

You don't need an iPhone to try out iPhone apps. Since the application platform is just a browser, you can see right now how some of the apps that people are building will look on your phone.

We've covered Digg and OneTrip already, but to see even more iPhone apps all together on one page, check out iPhoneApplicationList. For best results you should use Safari, although I've also had good luck previewing iPhone apps in Firefox.

Since the apps are just Web pages, no doubt there will be many, many iPhone app directories springing up soon.

Apple going into car tech?

Is Apple looking to compete with Garmin or Alpine down the road?

German magazine Focus has reported that Apple is developing something that would combine maintenance, entertainment, communication and navigation for cars into one device and that Mercedes will be the first to feature it.

A dashboard system for Mercedes from Apple, or an iPhone integration system for the Mercedes, seems like a logical probability given the fact that the two partnered on the first iPod integration kit for cars in 2006.

Appled refused to comment directly on either possibility.

"We have not announced plans yet," said Tom … Read more

Helio's snazzy store

While visiting family in Palo Alto last weekend, I came upon a Helio store on the city's main shopping street, University Avenue. I knew the youth-centric MVNO carrier opened four stores in California and Colorado, but this was my first chance to visit one of the locations. I couldn't snap pictures inside, but like the carrier's corporate image, the store's interior was flashy, slick, and comfortable. There were lounge chairs, the staff was quite attentive, and the phones were featured in interactive display cases. My 6-year-old nephew was decidedly unimpressed until I showed him the dual-sliding … Read more

Vertu's latest diamond phone in the pink

Silly us. After seeing some of Vertu's recent handsets, we thought the luxury phone maker might be headed in a more subdued direction. After all, they were a far cry from the $310,000 "Signature Cobra" or even its Ferrari anniversary edition.

But nay. The company has come back with a vengeance, unveiling the "Pink Diamond Signature," a handset made of rose gold that Sybarites says "features a full spectrum of pink diamonds as well as clear diamonds paved in flower patterns along the side of the phone."

What, no platinum? It must … Read more
