I know I have a strange fetish for cell phone speakers, which is why I had to scope out these Samsung ASP700 speakers that I first saw at CES. I found them at CTIA sitting pretty in Samsung's booth (where else would they be?) while attached to a Samsung Juke. These round little beauties, which have a decent sound for their size, include an ICE amplifier. Considering they're designed by Bang & Olufsen, it's not surprising that they're so eye-catching.
It seems that Microsoft's Scott Rockfeld was talking some smack about the iPhone at the London launch of Windows Mobile 6.1.
"We are not at all worried. We think we've got the one mobile platform you'll use for the rest of your life."
"Here lies Ted. He used Windows Mobile." Yeesh. Thanks for the creepy marketing campaign, Microsoft.
However Rockfeld was quick to dash Apple's hopes of dominating the smartphone market...
Uh, that should probably be "quick to try to dash Apple's hopes". The Macalope expects that if … Read more
Though Sprint is carefully avoiding any direct comparisons with the iPhone, it's obvious that its new Samsung Instinct (SPH-M800) is meant to compete with Apple's device. They look almost the same (our Instinct slide show has a gallery of shots), they do a lot of the same things, and they rely heavily on touch screens and unique interfaces. These comparisons are inevitable and Samsung and Sprint are doing nothing to silence them. So Apple fanboys and slamboys, just take a deep breath before the flame wars begin.
I have to emphasize the Instinct is no iPhone killer, but … Read more
Opera, that plucky browser publisher that is neither Microsoft nor Mozilla, has released Opera Mini 4.1 beta with promises of 50 percent faster page loading, among other claimed improvements. The thing is, they might be right.
Mini 4.1b is definitely faster than Mini 4, although actual speeds depend on your wireless connection and the kind of phone you're using. The standard page view loads up what looks like a large thumbnail of the page with images small but discernible and strangely crisp for their size. The "mobile" view presents the URL's information in a … Read more
Apple has suddenly hit a shortage of iPhones, Paul Kedrosky notes. But why? And when will the shortage end? Most interestingly, does it portend the imminent arrival of the 3G iPhone?
Paul suggests the following reasons:Apple has a component issue and is doing a quiet recall Apple has a supply issue with a major sole-source supplier Apple is set to do a surprise launch of a 3G phone
Even Option 3 isn't great for Apple, as it means it is losing out on hundreds of thousands of sales. Any ideas?
It seems as if the hype over Iron Man has been going on forever, so we're surprised that it's taken this long for someone to release a phone dedicated to the movie. (Side note: Are we the only ones who think Robert Downey Jr. is totally miscast?)
Like other promotional movie phones, including Homer Simpson's cellie, this customized LG Shine will bear the colors of its hero and include exclusive footage from the film. The main difference is that this handset is finished in 18k gold (not iron) and will be given away in an online drawing, … Read more
An Apple rumor a day keeps a slow news day away. Right? Though idle chit chat about tech's most gossiped-about company pops up all the time, they tend to be quashed or talked to death before another one comes along that's juicier. One recent rumor is still floating around the Web.
Sometimes the rumors are generated by simply making logical leaps, as in Wednesday's Apple-will-use-Atom-processors yarn, which my colleague Tom Krazit flatly dismisses. Other times, they're based on rumors overheard in Asia, like last week when Gartner's Ken Dulaney said he heard that Apple has … Read more
BenQ has never really been known for its stylish handset designs or, for that matter, slim phones. But it seems that the company is looking to change that impression with its upcoming T60 mobile phone.
Initially, the most striking thing about the T60 is its profile. It measures less than 9 millimeters thick (0.35 inches), which makes it one of the thinnest handsets in the market today besides the Samsung Ultra Edition phones.
However, what really captured our attention was the T60's beautifully crafted design. Its glossy stainless-steel back plate combined with smooth curves and a minimalist button … Read more
I've never understood why a cell phone signal-blocking handset case is needed when all one has to do is simply switch off the darn phone. But if you really must have one, just to show your geek mates you've something they don't (for good reason), check out this $6.38 option. It's available at the irresistible DealExtreme--an online retailer that BoingBoing accurately sums up as a seller of "cheap Chinese crap you were never sure you needed"--with free worldwide shipping thrown in.
However, the "leather" in the casing looks dodgy at … Read more
Apple is an Intel customer. Intel has a new chip. Therefore, Apple will use Intel's new chip.
Such leaps of logic are easy to make when you need to construct an SEO-friendly headline, or to attach a news hook to an announcement of a chip that has already been announced five or six times but still won't appear in any devices for another couple of months. Intel is talking up its Atom processor halfway around the world at its Intel Developer Forum in Shanghai, prompting Forbes to resurrect the "Apple will use Silverthorne" rumor from a … Read more
