You can run, but you can't hide, Palm. It appears that some enterprising individual unearthed the user guide for the yet-to-be-announced Palm Treo 800w on Sprint's Web site yesterday. This news actually isn't a complete surprise as these rumors have been circulating the Web for a while now. However, this latest find makes the speculation all the more believable. The Treo 800w will reportedly run Windows Mobile 6.1 with support for EV-DO Rev. A, GPS and Wi-Fi, and a 320x320-pixel resolution touch screen. No one seems to know the exact launch date, although Sunday, July 13th … Read more
Three lucky tech writers got their hands on early copies of the iPhone 3G. We weren't among them, but we did summarize what they had to say about the new smartphone.
Twitter traffic has skyrocketed since last year, despite chronic site meltdowns and anecdotes of people switching over to alternative services. And Google has hopped on the online social train with its introduction of Lively. Unlike the popular Second Life, the program doesn't require downloading extra software--and is designed to be included in the user's real life. CNET News reporter Stephen Shankland tested it out, and in … Read more
Rogers Communications, Canada's dominant wireless carrier, has responded to the outcry over its iPhone rate plans with a new option for nearly unlimited data.
The company announced a $30-a-month data plan for the iPhone 3G that subscribers can add to their voice plans. With it, they can consume up to 6 gigabytes of data a month.
Before Wednesday, Rogers drew the ire of many a Canadian with its plan to offer a maximum 2GB voice-data plan at $115 a month. Lots of other carriers are offering unlimited data plans for the iPhone, which generates much more Web traffic on … Read more
If you're planning on waiting in line for an iPhone, be sure to do your homework and bring all the necessary items with you. Or, watch Wednesday's edition of the Daily Debrief where I talk to CNET News' Tom Krazit about the lines and the purchase process. Apple has finally disclosed that stores will start selling the phones at 8 a.m. The company has also said it will let customers into the stores in groups of 30. This part of the system sounds similar to last year, but this year's big unknown is what the activation … Read more
In the perfect world that exists only inside my head, all cell phones and MP3 players incorporate A2DP, also known as stereo Bluetooth. Consequently, they're all compatible with stereo Bluetooth headsets like the Jabra BT8010, which CNET rated 8/10, and which CompUSA and TigerDirect (different outfits, same owner) currently have on sale for $37.99. That's a pretty big savings over the original $149 list price.
During business hours, the BT8010 functions as a fairly standard headset, albeit one with a cool OLED display and jog dial. When you want to get your groove on, you just … Read more
CORRECTION July 9 at 10:48 a.m. PDT: This article misstated the BlackBerry Bold's display type. It does not have a touch screen. The story has been updated to reflect this change.
Apple's iPhone 3G hits store shelves on Friday, but if you haven't been struck with iPhone fever, don't fret. There are plenty of alternatives that offer similar style and features. And they may even be easier on your wallet in the long run.
To some Apple fans, phones such as the Samsung Instinct or the HTC Diamond are simply iPhone wannabes. But to … Read more
Mippin, a mobile feed reading service I looked at back in late 2007, has undergone a world of change in the last 10 months. On Tuesday night, the site is launching a new version aimed specifically at iPhone users--a growing segment of the market which will soon be even larger with the forthcoming release of the 3G model.
This new version follows in the footsteps of older iterations, but has been tweaked to fit the screen a little better, as well as deliver an overall performance increase in page load times. The company has also laid the groundwork for an … Read more
The first iPhone 3G reviews have been released, and if you've been paying attention to the news for the past month, you won't be surprised.
Walt Mossberg of All Things Digital, David Pogue of The New York Times, and Edward Baig of USA Today were the chosen few selected to review the iPhone 3G ahead of its launch on Friday. There wasn't nearly as much suspense about the reviews this year, since we already knew the iPhone 3G was--with the exception of the faster networks, GPS, and third-party applications--essentially the same phone.
Still, some interesting details … Read more
Though there's no shortage of places to buy an unlocked iPhone, I haven't seen many wireless stores that specialize in selling them. But last weekend, I came across a store in San Francisco's Civic Center (corner of Larkin and Golden Gate) that does just that. Not only will the store sell you an unlocked iPhone with the activation of a new T-Mobile account--all for just $299--but also it will unlock your current AT&T iPhone for you. Since it was Saturday and the day after Independence Day the store was closed, so I didn't get … Read more
The Nokia 2760 is now for sale on T-Mobile's Web site. The simple flip phone doesn't offer much in the way of features, but the blue and silver design is appealing. Inside you'll find text and multimedia messaging, personal organizer features, a VGA camera, an FM radio, Bluetooth, and a speakerphone. That's a functional set of goodies but the dual-band support (GSM 850 and 1900) will limit the phone's roaming outside of North America. The 2760 is just $19.99 with service or $89.99 if you pay full price.
