Motorola CEO Zander to resign at end of year

Correction at 8:15 a.m. PST: Due to an editing error, Motorola's standing in the handset industry was misstated. Motorola is the No. 3 handset maker worldwide.

Embattled Motorola CEO Ed Zander will resign from his post at the end of the year, the company announced Friday.

Greg Brown, Motorola's chief operating officer and president, will take over as the company's CEO. Brown was also appointed to the Motorola board in July.

Zander, who has struggled to right the cell phone maker and successfully fought off a proxy fight with billionaire investor Carl Icahn earlier this … Read more

T-Mobile temporarily pulls Sidekick Slide--updated

It's lights out for the T-Mobile Sidekick Slide--well, temporarily anyway. T-Mobile and Motorola pulled the new Sidekick from the carrier's lineup last Friday after confirming that some devices are powering off after opening and closing the phone. Motorola says it's currently working to identify the cause of the problem, but geez, that's no way to make a first impression. If you'll remember, the Slide is the first Sidekick not to be made by Sharp. We should note that the Sharp devices, including the T-Mobile Sidekick LX and Sidekick iD, do not suffer from this … Read more

Motorola's eartastic Bluetooth headset

Motorola has a had a bit of a bumpy ride in the past six months, but recently we've seen some pretty cool stuff come from the company, including the Razr 2 V8 and this little Bluetooth headset, called the Motopure H12.

Similar to the Jawbone, this petite headset uses noise-canceling technology to produce a better experience when you're listening to a caller. At only 10 grams (a little more than a third of an ounce), the H12 is really light and very wearable too. According to a Motorola PR, the H12 was voted the most comfortable design during … Read more

Video: Motorola's T505 turns Bluetooth audio into FM

FM transmitters are nothing new, and neither are devices that stream audio via the advanced A2DP profile. But we haven't seen many devices that use both wireless technologies in the same application. That's exactly what Motorola's T505 does: As well as being a slick-looking in-car Bluetooth speakerphone, the visor-mounted T505 can be used to stream music from an A2DP device directly to the car stereo, without the need for the latter to be equipped with the advanced Bluetooth profile.

It manages this feat with a digital FM transmitter, which searches frequencies in the FM range with the … Read more

When wallpaper goes wrong

And here I thought Alltel's commercials were bad. As I prepared to review the Motorola Rokr Z6m I was scrolling through the phone's available wallpapers to see what it offered. After passing by the standard options that come with any Alltel or Motorola handset, I found a wallpaper that stopped me cold.

In the middle of a blue sunburst pattern was an animated figure of the blue-shirted spokesman from Alltel's grating commercials. The wallpaper shows "Chad" (as he is called) gyrating away to some unheard music. Though I can't put my finger on exactly … Read more

Photos: Motorola's TLKR walkie-talkies

Come in walkie-talkie fans. Over. The Motorola TLKR T5 two-way radio not only looks good but works pretty well too. With a potential range of 6km--in perfect conditions, natch--we managed to get it working all around Crave UK's trendy penthouse offices, which beats the pants off those toy ones you get at Toys "R" Us.

You can pick up a pair of these for about 60 pounds (about $125), which we think isn't bad at all. They're very robust, so they're ideal for outdoor use. Whether you a skier, hiker, climber or just like … Read more

AT&T scores Motorola Q9h Global

OK, it only took a year and a half, but I suppose it's better late than never. Tonight, AT&T and Motorola finally took the wraps off the Motorola Q9h Global, a long overdue GSM version of the Motorola Q. The quad-band Windows Mobile 6 smartphone isn't the same sleek device we saw in May 2006.

Like the Motorola Q9m for Verizon Wireless, it's bulked up a bit, but this allowed for a more spacious keyboard and added features. Like what? Well, how about built-in GPS, HSDPA, Bluetooth, and a 2-megapixel camera? Messaging is a top … Read more

You can't keep Nokia down

Nokia remains the king of the cell phone world and it shows no signs of being pushed from its throne anytime soon. According to figures that IDC released yesterday, the Finnish mobile giant held a 38.6 percent worldwide market in the third quarter this year, an increase from 34.8 percent during the same period a year earlier. As for phone shipments, Nokia shipped 111.7 million devices in the third quarter. That's a big jump from 88.5 million devices in the third quarter of 2006, mostly because of increases in the entry-level market.
