Top 5 download updates from Macworld

With Macworld in full swing, throngs of people are flooding the streets of San Francisco to check out the latest offerings from Apple and all the other vendors exhibiting their wares at the expo. But some Mac-related stuff is only indirectly related to what's happening on the showroom floor or how thin the new MacBook Air is.

One thing I've noticed as a Mac software editor is how, when Apple has its biggest show of the year, the majority of Mac software developers figure it is the best time to release an update for their apps. I've … Read more

BlackBerry roundup: Mobile photo apps

Of the photo solutions mentioned in the BlackBerry forums I've been visiting lately, SplashPhoto and Ascendo Photos were the two most-often mentioned. That's just the kind of head-to-head challenge I like, and I threw in one more, ITookThisOnMyPhone, for flavor.

Ascendo Photos Desktop ($29.95) gathers JPEG, GIF, BMP, TIFF, and PNG photos on your PC in a crisp, smart interface. The photo organization is reminiscent of Picasa--sibling images in a folder are horizontally arranged, with folders scrolling vertically. Photos drag and drop into an emulator, which you use to center the photo and perform basic editing--rotation, flipping, and color correction. Three sizing choices determine if photos appear cropped, shrunken, or alarmingly large. A button click transfers photos from desktop to device.

On the BlackBerry, Ascendo Photos shows transfered images clearly, but not quite cogently. It requires a click too many to see your photos, and the app wastes an opportunity to corral snaps taken from the cell phone. However, there's good file information; options to save to phone or SD memory, add galleries, and assign icons; and the ability to e-mail photos.… Read more

Photobucket goes mobile, launches pocket-friendly site

Photobucket is launching a mobile version of its service today and can be found at m.Photobucket.com. Users with any browser-enabled handset will be able to search and browse both public and privately uploaded photos at up to five at a time using keypad shortcuts. Additionally Photobucket is pushing user uploads of both photos and videos from their phones as a new feature, although this functionality has been around since late 2006 using the slightly less glamorous MMS and e-mail route as opposed to coding an app for phones on the Windows Mobile or Symbian platforms.

Photobucket's internal … Read more

Does the world need a 32-inch digital frame?

There was a time, only a few months ago, when 15-inch screens were considered gargantuan for digital photo frames. That could soon be considered laughably puny if the likes of Smartparts OptiPix have their way.

The New Jersey company has unveiled a ridiculous 32-inch LCD (shown here) with a 1,366x768 resolution to highlight every wart of its subject. And as if that weren't enough, Gizmag says Smartparts is also trotting out a second high-definition frame that comes with a built-in one-touch printer to provide a hard copy on the spot.

The downside to all this, of course, is … Read more

Digital photo frames have arrived

Now that digital photography is a ubiquitous part of family life, digital photo frames are emerging as a hot new device for displaying and sharing memories. Not only can you set a frame to run through a dynamic slide show, but you can send photos remotely to a loved one's frame.

I had a chance to preview three lines yesterday: Kodak, Cevia, and Smartparts. All of them delivered beautiful images and they each have differentiating features that may be a deciding factor for you. … Read more

Philips gives snapshot of its 2008 digital photo frames

In recent years Philips has produced some of the better--and most popular--digital photo frames, and the company has announced it's expanding its line of frames to include 6-, 7- and 8-inch models that incorporate technologies "that enhance screen color and contrast for an unparalleled showcase of priceless images."

The press release notes that, "New models leverage RadiantColor, Philips' innovation that extends the color on the edges of a less-than-full-screen photo to the sides of the screen. This alleviates black bars as well as aspect ratio distortion to ensure the best viewing experience, adding new glow to … Read more

Power Downloader finds a new online photo browser

With 2008 under way, Power Downloader knew it was time to get back to work. His first order of business would be to sift through e-mails that had piled up over the holidays. After scanning through the messages from various contacts around the world, Power came upon an e-mail from Francois Foto, one of Power's most trusted contacts from France.

After wishing Power Downloader a happy new year, Francois Foto mentioned that one of his new year's resolutions was to use his vast photo library in a some sort of project. One idea he thought of was to … Read more
