We were incredibly impressed by the diesel version of BMW's 3-series, although a lot of that had to do with the car's updated iDrive interface. But our heightened expectations for the diesel X5 were not met. Mileage was good, but not dramatically good, and trying to get through city streets felt like tug boat piloting. Worse, the diesel X5 is saddled with the old version of iDrive.
Young moms want to look cool, keep their children safe, and save money, according to Ford Motors. The company recently unveiled the latest sporty (yet green), spacious (yet compact) vehicle set for release this summer.

Bathed in Sunburst Orange Pearl, the chunky 2009 Dodge Nitro R/T 4X4 looks like a child's Tonka truck toy. Hop inside and the SUV's cabin also feels very toylike, with low-grade plastic trimming on every visible surface and a general cheapness to the feel of things that implies disposability.
On the road, the Nitro's 4.0-liter V-6 makes a lot of noise but doesn't seem to back it up with performance. Adding insult to injury, the R/T's "sport-tuned" suspension did a better job of tossing passengers around the cabin than it … Read more
Formerly a dark horse, Mitsubishi appears to be taking the lead in the race to electrify. The Japanese automaker is starting sales this July of the all-electric iMiev in Japan, and signed this week a Memorandum of Understanding with the Principality of Monaco to receive a fleet of iMiev by the end of the year.
The Memorandum signified the Principalities intention to become a testing ground for the electric vehicle, and will be used by community services and businesses. Mitsubishi is gaining traction with other countries that are eager to jump on the (electric) bandwagon, and is testing the car … Read more
I have no delusions of being a superspy like James Bond. Sure, I have the swagger and the charm, and I look dashing in a tuxedo, but right now I don't have a car, let alone a car with machine guns and grill-mounted missiles to destroy my own personal villains.
But that's not to say I couldn't get one. And I don't need any snotty Q character to hand me the keys, so long as I can come up with $125,900. Sure, the weapons are fake, but that's OK; I don't have Bond'… Read more
Do cowboys carry MP3 players and cell phones? That's what Ford seems to be saying with the new F-150. We got our hands on an F-150 Lariat with a Supercrew cab and found a comfortable interior decked out in leather, complete with Ford's Sync system. Big and tough-looking on the outside, the cab practically coddles the occupants. And check out our own Molly Wood as she takes the truck to a ranch to see what the horses think.
Digg.com co-founder Kevin Rose has a bit of a penchant for being uncannily accurate with his Apple predictions. Is it possible that he now has some sort of inside information on Tesla Motors' upcoming Model S electric sedan?
Via Twitter, Rose announced, "someone leaked me some Tesla Model S (electric car) pics, seems to have a huge touch-screen display."
Rose finishes his post with a link to his Flickr page containing photos of the interior and exterior, including the aforementioned "huge touch screen" (which I must say is a bit of an understatement; that thing … Read more
Above the desk of Andrew Farah, the Volt's lead engineer, hangs a clock counting down the days until GM begins the production of 80 Chevrolet Volt plug-in hybrid prototypes.
Production begins on June 1 with plans to ramp up to 10 prototypes a week until 80 have been made. The 30 that have been cruising around have the final preproduction powertrain, but not the final interior or exterior.
These prototypes "will look, taste, smell, and feel like the Volt. They are the Volt," Farrah is quoted saying to GM's blog about the Volt, "my goal … Read more
Hyundai released details of its upcoming Genesis Coupe this morning (via Webcast). Not exactly the best kept secret in automotive news, the Genesis Coupe is related to the Genesis Sedan in the loosest way possible, sharing very few components such as the 3.8-liter V-6 engine and six-speed automatic transmission.
Hyundai used the Infiniti G37s Coupe, the Mazda RX-8, and the BMW 335i coupe as benchmarks for the Genesis Coupe's performance.
Two engine choices
The Genesis Coupe will be available with a choice of two engines: a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that builds 210 horsepower at 6,000rpm with … Read more
