Vote in the 2007 Car Tech Awards

Another year comes to a close and we consider all the amazing cars we've reviewed. For this year's Car Tech Awards, we've nominated 10 cars in the contest for the 2007 Tech Car of the Year. You can look at the nominees, find out why we selected each one, and cast your vote. We will take the result or our reader poll and the votes of our staff judges to decide the 2007 Tech Car of the Year, which we will announce on January 14, 2008. We also have a set of additional awards for such categories … Read more

Photos: Evo X versus the 2008 WRX STI

Mention rally driving and two cars leap to mind: the Subaru WRX STI and the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution. These two veterans of the track have been duking it out for over a decade, and they both get a major upgrade for the 2008 model year in the form of the Evo X (as in 10) and the 2008 Impreza WRX STI. Both Subaru and Mitsubishi used the second day of the Los Angeles Auto Show to unveil their latest racers, and we could think of no better time to pit their latest offerings against each other. Photos: Sporty concept cars from Tokyo

While car companies want to show off their environmental credentials, they also realize that performance never goes out of style. We spent quite a bit of time going over these sporty concept cars at the 2007 Tokyo auto show. They range from small, fun performance cars from the likes of Honda and Peugeot, to big sport luxury concepts from Nissan and Suzuki, and all the way up to pure design plays like the Mazda Taiki.

Photos: Mitsubishi I Miev Sport concept

Mitsubishi's I Miev Sport incorporates an amazing amount of new technologies to complement the work the company has already been doing on electric cars. With three electric motors making up its drive train, the I Miev Sport gets a range of 200 kilometers. For a little extra juice, it uses regenerative brakes, miniturbines in its grille, and solar panels on its roof. Mitsubishi unveiled this latest example of its research into practical electric cars at the 2007 Tokyo auto show.

Mitsubishi Evo X goes on sale

That's right, the 10th generation of the World Rally Car version of the Mitsubishi Lancer, a car made famous by enthusiasts and in video games, goes on sale today, October 1. But it will only be available at Japanese dealerships. Still, the timing suggests that we won't have to wait too long in the U.S., maybe just the amount of time for a cargo load to cross the Pacific. Also, one of the top features we are looking forward to, the dual clutch SST transmission, won't be available until November, so Christmas isn't coming early … Read more

Mitsubishi planning 3D Blu-ray player for early 2008

Along with a few other tech journalists, I spent a couple of hours today over at the Westchester Country Club, which is gearing up for The Barclays PGA Tour event. What the hell was I doing there? Well, as part of a marketing deal with the PGA Tour, Mitsubishi is the "official large outdoor video display provider" of the Tour, and the PR team wanted us to see some of these displays in action--along with the Tour's ShotLink technology, which tracks players' shots almost down to the centimeter (the info is then displayed on those giant Mitsubishi scoreboards). That's all sorts of interesting if you're a golf fan, but things got a little sexier when Mitsubishi representatives took us into a hospitality suite, handed us each a pair of fancy 3D glasses (a little smaller than the ones shown in the photo), and showed us a demo of some new 3D-imaging technology the company's working on.

The demo was run from a massive Dell desktop and output onto a large DLP set. In an effort to inject new life into the fading rear-projection category, the company's pitch was that the 3D technology worked with existing DLP TVs and projectors (due to DLP's native 120Hz refresh rate, which allows you to split it into 60/60 for 3D) but not with LCD and plasma displays.

Most of us were pretty impressed by the demo, which included clips from movies, commercials, and sporting events. There was real depth to the 3D, and you got that 3D-feeling of objects poking out at you from the screen. All the demo material had been shot in 3D, but the kicker to the whole presentation was that Mitsubishi apparently has a Blu-ray player in its labs that can convert existing 2D movies into 3D on the fly. Better yet, according to company representatives, it may be available early next year.

Mitsubishi Concept-cX

Mitsubishi fulfills our love of concept cars with its just-announced Concept-cX, to be officially unveiled at the upcoming Frankfurt auto show. This concept car is designed as a crossover (although the Mitsubishi Outlander covers that ground pretty well). As a crossover, Concept-cX will have an SUV-like body, but an engine, chassis, and suspension designed for the road. The press release mentions a turbocharged 1.8-liter clean diesel engine that complies with the new Euro 5 emissions standard, appropriate for a car that will be shown at a European auto show. Other tech notes we like about this car are the … Read more

Mitsubishi announces three new DLP HDTV lines

Mitsubishi announced three new lines of 1080p DLP HDTVs today, including the flagship Diamond series.

We've got the full details below, but here's the short story. All of the DLP (digital light processing) HDTVs have at least three HDMI 1.3 inputs, along with support for x.v.Color (also known as xvYCC)--a new color space that offers 80 percent more color than standard ATSC color space.

These are the first displays we're aware of that have x.v.Color support, but for right now it's more marketing hype than a useful feature. The problem … Read more

New flat-panel LCDs from Mitsubishi
