Tablet shipments to top laptops: Thank Nexus 7, iPad Mini

Tablet shipments will eclipse laptops for the first time in North America, driven by price and variety, says NPD DisplaySearch.

Popular $199 models and a wider variety of sizes will propel fourth-quarter tablet shipments to 21.5 million units, "far exceeding" the 14.6 million laptops that are expected to ship in the same period, according to a forecast today by DisplaySearch's Richard Shim.

Apple moves to trademark 'iPad Mini' in the U.S.

Apple has applied for a trademark on the "iPad Mini" brand.

The company filed the trademark application with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last week. In the application, Apple describes its tablet as a full-featured slate, offering everything from Web connectivity to calendaring.

Apple's LTE-equipped iPad Mini and fourth-generation iPad are now available in carrier stores -- at least some of them do.

Both Sprint and AT&T announced today that they're now carrying the devices. Verizon hasn't announced its own availability, but the company is also expected to be carrying the tablets in its stores today. The iPads are already available for immediate shipment on Verizon's site.

LTE iPad Mini on sale in carrier stores tomorrow

iPad Mini buyers waiting for the LTE version of the tablet will have their chance to buy a device in Sprint carrier stores beginning Friday. Sprint also will start carrying the fourth-generation iPad.

The LTE iPad Mini will be available in black and white versions, but will cost significantly more than its Wi-Fi-only sibling. The 16GB will sell for $459.99, the 32GB for $559.99, and the 64GB for $659.99.
